Slick maybe, but far from quick.

I originally gave this little HP drive, which is currently #1 in Amazon sales, 5 stars. It's small, light, simple, has more than the advertised space and comes with no extra clutter or proprietary programs. However, I've changed my mind after waiting--and waiting--for it to load up with files. In fact, I've just compared this HP to one of those much-maligned generic 32GB drives going for the same price on that other big auction site. That cheap generic capacious drive, considered to be an impostor, copied over 2GB of files in less than 5 minutes. I started copying the same material on to this HP drive in the mean time, and it's still short of the quarter mark. In other words, it's more than 4 X times slower than the drives that are frequently condemned as phony, counterfeit, rip-offs, etc. If so, my loss is--my win.

As for the diminutive size of so many of the new "micro" thumb drives, consider it a mixed blessing. Worse, because of the design of this HP model, I've decided to keep it "permanently" installed in the port that hub manufacturers are now designating for flash drives. For reasons known only to HP, there's no provision for slipping this tiny sliver of a drive on a key ring, and the cap, besides being even smaller and easily misplaced, is too tiny to fit over the opposite end of the drive when the USB connector is in use. So if keeping the drive protected is important to you, not to mention hanging on to the cap, it may be worth the extra few bucks for a Sandisk with retractable USB connector (avoid the micro-sized version) or a Kingston with a USB connector that "jack-knifes" in and out of the handle.''

Problems with reliability of data

If you plan to use this usb drive to store/move around large data files, then I recommend going with a different product. I'm having reliability problems with the data I'm copy to/from the usb drive. I have a smaller 2gig usb drive, and I am not experiencing the same problems as I am with this one.

I'm using a few Mac systems (all OS 10.5 and above), and I'm using this drive to move around very large drum scans (some are almost a gig in size). I use something called a MD5 crc check to verify the files. When I copy a file that is larger than 1 gig in size, there is a crc check failure consistently. I do not run into the same problem when I use my smaller 2 gig flash drive. I've checked to make sure that it isn't an issue with the format of the drive (I use NTFS format for the usb flash drive). I've tried a variety of different strategies to try to solve this problem (such as breaking the files into smaller pieces and joining them later). I keep running into issues with data reliability.

I also don't run into problems when I use my external firewire drive (but it's big and bulky compared to this nice little flash drive). It's too bad since I was hoping to find something small that would be able to carry around a decent number of files.

I remember paying $60 for a 2GB Flash Drive from Walmart a few years ago and thinking I got an awesome deal (which it was at the time, aside from the fact it came with it's own UI software).

As a semi-tech guru I learned how annoying it was to have a flash drive that required drivers or had pre-loaded software that launched to "help you" navigate through the drive. (SanDisk was horrible about this on my 2GB drive). Because of this I couldn't use my old 2GB memory card on certain Windows Vista editions and definitely nothing like my Playstation 3 which is unable to install drivers. Because of this, I had to keep going back to my dinosaur 512MB flash drive on newer technology, because it was the only thing I had that was "basic" enough to be recognized.

Well this 8GB HP flash drive is just like my old 512MB flash drive in regards that it is incredibly simple which insures compatibility with just about anything. The flash drive works with my old operating systems, Windows 7, Playstation 3, and even the USB port on my HDTV. There are no drivers to install, it is plug and play.

People mentioned that the cap is easy to come off, but I haven't had a problem with it yet, but it does "feel" like it could easily fall off if enough pressure was put on it.

The only bad part about the drive is the price (and even this depends on how cheap you are). Yes, this drive is "HP" branded which does give confidence to it's reliability. However memory now a days is pretty cheap. I mean I purchased a 500GB hard drive for $40 two weeks ago. I searched around and found a 128GB flash drive for $20. However, I couldn't determine if other drives were "driverless" and the last thing I wanted to do was spend $20 on a 128GB flash drive that I couldn't use on my PS3 to transfer my music and videos. I mean if you can't use it for what you want it for, then it doesn't matter how much storage space it stores, does it?

I chose the safe route and got the 8GB HP flash drive and although I think the write speed could be much faster, it does get the job and works everywhere. If you aren't tech savvy and don't want deal with the hassle of learning things and don't mind waiting an extra 5-10 minutes for large file transfers then I highly recommend this product. I don't regret it.

I'm so glad I am able to use this for college. It's fast and I'm very happy with this USB flash. The only slight problem is the cap is loose.
