If you follow the author's link you will find the code samples by Book and Chapter. When you click on the link you see the results of the code, not the code. You have to right click to see the code. I think the first reviewer did not know how to do this. I checked three code samples and everything was fine. They were exactly the same as in the book.
This is good because you see the real results of the code and the code itself, best of both worlds.

The only negative thing about this book is it is heavy, it is 1078 pages! I am looking at a copy from the library and placing an order to buy one. Being 1078 pages it is a lot of material for the price. Out of 15 books from the library this was my choice and I was surprised at the negative feedback so I had to check this out for myself. It is OK!

The font is dark. I have bad eyes and there is no book that I can read for very long, including the Kindle. But the dark font helps. Also I have had good luck in the past with Dummies books.

Look at the 8 "books" contained inside this book.

Yes, you can pretty much find all of the material in this book somewhere on the Internet, but chances are it will not be covered in as much detail or depth. I still believe a well-written book is the best access to fundamental materials for learning how to code. If this had a bit more Javascript and jQuery included, it would be darn near perfect, but even as it is, I give it 5 stars as an introductory educational tool.

I purchased the First Edition of this book when it came out and was amazed at how much information was in the book. It's packed with basic to advanced topics, not just fluff some other massive books are filled with. I specifically purchased the book for the updated HTML5 and CSS3 material, but the JavaScript and PHP sections are very helpful too.

Be sure to check out the "About the Author", and "Acknowledgements" in the back of the book on page 1071. It seems strange the publisher choose to place it in the back in the 3rd edition.

I've done some HTML4 programming for over 10 years, built and modified some websites in old fashioned HTML4 and very simple CSS with success, but stopped for a couple of years. Now I'm brushing-up and updating on HTML5 and CSS3 using this "DUMMIES" book I've been studying for several months now, and just began using it in practical hands-on with new web projects here at work beginning a week ago, and while most examples in the book made sense and easy to understand, I've noticed two BAD FLAWS going just 1/3 way through this book:

CHAPTER 3: STYLING LISTS AND MENUS: Pages 321-325 transitions the user in the learning process from creating nested dropdown menus to stylized nested BUTTON dropdown menus; the intended HTML in the"HiddenList" example and the revised HTML DOES NOT WORK, and it appears the problem has something to do with the missing <div id = "menu"> tag(s) that should make such webpage button designs work. I've addressed the problem on several occasions over a few days with author Andy Harris' contact on his aharris.net for resolving this issue, but he does not respond and might as well be in a vegetative state or have crawled into some hole and died. After trying numerous workarounds and permutations... maybe a few hacks, I could only get the problem partially solved. This dropdown menu technique is critical, and terribly disappointing how Andy Harris screwed up this part of his instructional publication.

CHAPTER 6: CSS SPECIAL EFFECTS: I thought I give something else a try after the book provided bum information about the nested dropdown menu button; Pages 252-257 shows some simple coding with embedded CSS to create examples of simple square-shaped transformations and transitions.

I bought this book as a general and "for dummies" introduction to all these languages. The first chapter was fine for me as I knew a little HTML before going into it, but then chapter two lost me. The author gives you copious examples of code, but with CSS, never explained the syntax. Why for example do you use these { }? It was easy to understand the opening and closing of tags such as <html></html> as this was explained in chapter 1, but then when you get to the harder stuff, it is not explained. The other unfortunate thing about this purchase, which is not the author's fault, is that part of the book is upside down and backwards. Pages 455 - 502 are upside down so I have to turn the book around and they are also backwards so I have to read the book like manga. I am disappointed with this book. I bought it to help me teach my students how to code but this didn't cater enough to dummies I felt so I bought another HTML/CSS book and am hoping it will cover some things not covered in this book.

Extremely useful especially for beginners, even better for college students going into computer science or communications. Requires no site to download files or anything extra unless you just choose to. I've been taking computer coding classes, but it's so fast paced that I don't retain the information or have little notes to fall back on to understand how it works. It has been great for a few research projects as well. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a reference or starting point.
