Highly recommended. One of my favorite quotes is when the author describes humility as "the displacement of self by the enthronment of God. Where God is all, self is nothing." Try living to that standard.
I did not know how important was the virtue of humility until I read this book in high school, and now I am 52 years old and still indebted to this book as I continue to be challenged by this book.
One thing is sure: Pursuing humility is not a joyless journey of faith, but an exceedingly joyful one as John the Baptist said, "The friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly at the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is now complete. He must increase, but I must decrease" (Jn. 3:29-30 ESV). And for this endeavor, Andrew Murray has done well for His church. Highly recommended.
I found this out after reading this book. Quite a lot of works. I'm lucky that I stumbled upon this one. This book has taught me exactly what I was hoping it would, and more. I first searched the web for a book on humility, because I wanted to expand my knowledge on the subject. Because of this book, I now truly know how to strive for humility. Through God's grace, Rev. Andrew Murray has given us a literary treasure. This book is only 50 pages in length. I read it a chapter a day - and this felt like I was receiving lessons from the Rev. himself. Each day I've been practicing my humility - now that I've reached the end of the book, it's time to say thanks. I'd also like to suggest this book to any "new" believers, i.e people who have either just joined or re-joined the Christian church. As a born again Orthodox Christian, I can say that this book has changed my life for the better. I look forward to reading his other books, and re-reading Humility - The Beauty of Holiness.
p.s. the books print is LARGE and well spaced, and incredibly EASY read, yet thoroughly thought provoking and spiritually edifying. Do NOT pass this one up.
"If once we learn that to be nothing before God is the glory of the creature, the spirit of Jesus, the joy of heaven, we shall welcome with our whole heart the discipline we may have in serving even those who try or annoy us."
As someone who gets easily annoyed by people, this was golden for me. Instead of getting annoyed, simply use it as an opportunity to know that God is using this person to humble me, so that I can draw closer to God and He can be glorified.
I haven't read too many books about the subject of humility. But, I highly recommend this one. It certainly establishes the definition of humility, and why we should practice it and attain it. And, this is exactly what I needed.
