Grace Jones was an icon in the disco-clubbing scene of the 1980s with such ground-breaking albums like "Nightclubbing" (from 1981) and "Slave to the Rhythm" (from 1985). But after 1989's weakly received "Bulletproof Heart", Jones faided out of the limelight, and nothing much was heard from her, until almost 20 years later when Jones came back with this album a few years ago. The album was recently re-released as a 2CD affair.

"Hurricane" starts with the original 2008 album (9 tracks; 49 min.) and what a delight that album it is. Starting of with the opening track "This Is" where Grace Jones declares "This is my voice/This is my weapon of choice", the album starts off as if the last 25 years never happened and this feels like the natural sequel to "Slave to the Rhythm". "Please to meet you/Please to see you on my plate" are the opening lyrics to "Corporate Cannibal", just wow, and perhaps the best track on here. "Well Well Well" reminds me musically of "Walking in the Rain" from one of her earlier albums. The title track and "Love You to Life" continue the outstanding music on here. Truth be told, there are no weak tracks on here. Where has Grace Jones been hiding these last 20 years?

CD2 brings "Hurricane: Dub" (10 tracks; 50 min.) bringing dub versions of all of the original albums tracks, plus one additional track not on the album ("Hell"). It's an okay listening experience, some tracks are barely recognizable from the original songs, while others are great. But ultimately you wanna buy this for the original "Hurricane" album. Sadly I've never had a chance to see Grace Jones live in concert. She did a couple of US shows when "Hurricane" was released in 2008, here's hoping that this re-release will bring her back for more shows. Now then, can we hope for more original material from Grace Jones? You know we want it!

Grace Jones, danceable, rockable, pop reggae at its very best. The production and musicianship is equal to the Compass Point Sessions. This is really cool music. The extra dub cd is mostly instrumentals of the albums songs with Grace using her voice sparingly. It's a trip all in itself, what a deal, 2for1. The songs are mostly sociological rather than romanantic. Even so they are great. "Isn't it a shame, how you became, the Devil in my life", twisted!! Corporate Cannibal, I still haven't figured it out yet. It's either another twisted love song or a commentary on the grotesque capitalistic adventurism so prevalent in our world today, Or maybe both. Just be glad it's a cd, she really can't jump out of the speakers and Git You! Ha ha ha ha ha. This Is, great openning number indicative of the truly wonderful album to follow. I see why this one has received no negative votes in the reviews. Williams Blood is an almost gospel song with a fade out of her singing the openning to Amazing Grace accapela. Let me tell you, this lady has class and style and a marvelous sense of humour. Just look at that Grace in hyper-drive cover art. This cd is the best of the new decade.

This is a fantastic collection--Five stars if there had been some new material (not just remixes) for those of us that had bought Hurricane three years ago. I already had the tracks and bought Hurricane Dub because I thought the packaging would be interesting--but it's kind of a disappointment. What a wasted opportunity to share photos and personal musings--and to encourage people actually to buy a cd.

I took a chance on this Grace comeback because the reviews were very good. Well they were right. This is a bumpin return for a woman who has always been a slave to the rhythm. I'll never hear a single track on the radio, but I'll be rockin this right along with her earlier hits in my world! Why change what works. Me like.

My first introduction to this album was viewing the video for "Corporate Cannibal" which, if you have not seen, I would also highly recommend. I have always been a fan of Grace Jones and am extremely impressed with this album. There are many nuggets of wisdom woven into the lyrics of these songs, and Grace takes you as the listener on a real emotional roller coaster. The opening song, "This Is" starts with the line "This is my voice, my weapon of choice" and her voice is indeed a weapon that pierces your mind, heart, and soul. Each song is great and the flow of the album is wonderful. It starts pretty intensely with "This Is" then mellows slightly with "Willam's Blood" which is an autobiographical song about her relationship with her family and an affiliation with the artistic versus the religious side of the family. "Corporate Cannibal" is a chilling song, evil to its core, just like the type of "legalized criminal" it describes. "I'm Crying (Mother's Tears)" is about her relationship with her mother and is a very heartfelt, emotional song that may well bring tears to your eyes. "Well, Well, Well" is the shortest song on the album, yet very powerful with a message of trying to make sense of one's own life in a crazy world. Next is the album's title song, "Hurricane" which is also rather dark, though not so much as "Corporate Cannibal." In this song, Grace describes herself as a hurricane "ripping up trees" which is very exemplary of the entirety of this album. "Love you to life" is another heartfelt song about personal relationships, where as "Sunset Sunrise" addresses humanity's relationship to the natural world.Read more ›
