Simply suction to your breast and let the pump do the work for you as it draws your milk using suction. 100% safe for mum, baby and our environment. How to use your breast pump: Sterilise your pump (caps are available online to purchase - caps keep the pump sterile after cleaning) Place top of pump over your nipple - make sure your nipple is n the neck of the pump and comfortable. Apply suction - you may need to adjust a couple of times. Once the pump is secure and comfortable you can squeeze the base of the pump (not interfering with the top/suction) to create some movement. A warm flannel on top of your breast is also a great tip and gently massage the top of your breast. Once milk begins to flow simply leave the pump alone to do its thing. Once the pump becomes full empty into a glass storage bottle and reposition. Also attach in the same way while your child is feeding on your other breast and collect all let down and milk which would other wise be lost into a breast pad. Halfway through some feeds my daughter has easily kicked this off my breast and milk spilled all over me.
The suction base is awesome…in theory. Very seldom does it actually stay suctioned to the surface I’ve stuck it to. Though it’s not the best, it does offer a little more stability than the gen 1 so I’m not mad at it.
All in all, it’s a Hakka. It saves my milk like my other Hakka and I love it. Having two has been awesome and I recommend the Hakka to all moms-to-be!
Let me start by saying that I am a FTM, I originally pumped with the Freemie cups/pumps, and I an a busy body. I don't even remember how I found out about this pump, but I love it. While my hands were free with the electric pump, I had to sit still. At first that was fine as I recovered. As I regained my mobility I neglected to pump as much, which lead to engorgement, baby continued to have problems latching properly, and I gave more formula. I hated to give baby so much formula, but what was I to do?
Enter whatever Haakaa ad I saw and a quick Google/Youtube search. BOOM!. I'm back to increasing my milk supply and stuffing those bottles with milk! Now for the actual product review:
Placement -
This pump was a bit tricky to manipulate at first - coming from sore nipples and the above story. It takes a little time to figure out the right ratio of areola to nipple and to get the proper suction. Like most people, I assume, I just squeeze out the air and stick it on like a regular suction cup, but that hurt. Have patience when figuring out how to place it. It is worth it. There is a diagram in the packaging and plenty of realistic videos to guide you.
Speed -
It does take a long time to pump the milk out. This product works by suction and it may take a minute for your body to get accustomed to the way it does it. This could also be because I am steadily increasing my supply rather than working with an established routine. I figure once I get back to work and on a regular schedule it won't take so long to get more. I have read that it works best while breastfeeding your LO. Well, for those of us who have a LO that prefers the bottle nipples - this is can be used as a primary pump. Personally, I pump one at a time until the letdown has slowed, then switch sides.
Versatility/Mobility -
I keep my mobility my carefully placing breast and pump under a semi tight shirt (camisole) and am careful on the bending and stooping so that I
don't knock it off. I'm actually pumping while sitting 'criss-cross-apple-sauce' on the couch. Once your're done with pumping, to stabilize it while you get the freezer bag or bottle ready, there is a handy suction base that stabilizes the pump while on the counter/table. It does work for us larger girls (I am well above a D AND I have a short torso).
*On another note, if you hold your LO while attached to this pump there is a very real danger that they can smack or kick it off.*
Cons -
I wish that it came with a top rather than having to buy the flat top or flower thing.
The suction doesn't stay when the milk level is low. I get that it expands as you produce, but sometimes after I place the pump in the beginning one side will pop out slowing the suction 'speed' and I'll have to replace or re-suction the thing.
The markings on the side are not accurate. I have to place the milk in another container to get the true measurement.
All in all, this is the pump for me. I don't think I'd pump while driving just yet, but I would whip this thing out in a jiffy if I were traveling. It has just the right amount of suction to be gentle and get all of your milk out. Best of all - after I learned to properly place the pump - NO MORE SORE NIPPLES!!!
Enjoy Ladies.
I am an exclusive pumper with a slow flow . I generally have to pump for 5-10 minutes before let down happens. Here is how i use the haakaa :
1) Sometimes during pumping , milk is collected predominantly from one breast and the other breast starts leaking an hour after pumping. Using the haakaa gets rid of engorgement on the leaky breast.
2. I dont do pumping sessions in the middle of the night. I still wake up to bottle feed the baby and many times the breasts leak during such times. I simply attach the haakka before i start the bottle feed and i have a decent collection in half an hour (milk supply hormones are supposed to be highly active in the 1AM-4AM time)
Summary : This will NOT replace an electric pump , but highly beneficial for breastfeeding moms and exclusive pumpers

Have heard amazing things about it but really disliked.
I did use it correctly, followed videos and instructions perfectly but still really really hurt! Can imagine its great when you have a clogged duct though.
Found it difficult to keep suction too.
I used to pump every 3 hours and had about 14oz of milk in 20 mins everytime i pumped but this pump only got 1oz out in about 15 mins of use.

PROS
- Comfortable once you get the hang of it
- Portable and discrete
- One piece so makes sterilising easier
- Silent/non motorised
- Battery free so no need to charge
- Non threatening so great for beginners
- Just as good as an electric pump
- Great for preventing engorgement when out and about
CONS
- Condensation/fogging can form inside pump
- Not exactly hands free
This pump was recommended to me by a friend and I was impressed with the price. At first, I found it hard to use but practice and some videos/advice online and I was good to go! I thought that I would use this to relieve myself but use an electric pump for large volumes when I needed to be away from my baby. But, actually, it compares favourably with the electric pump - personally, I can express just as much with both (but only first thing in the morning - I can't express with either at other times of the day). It's better than the electric pump in that it's easy to use and clean, though. It's perfect if you want to avoid feeling too full if you're out and about, or even if baby has fell asleep before you get the chance to empty your breasts - it's saved me feeling engorged at night a few times without the hassle of sterilising a pump (when I'm just discarding the milk). When using it at the same time as feeding baby, it's obviously non motorised so is silent and doesn't bother baby. Sometimes, my little one gets too distracted by the noise of the electric pump.
I'm being quite picky but, on the downside, it can "steam up" so I can't see if anything is actually coming out or how much I've expressed until I pull it off. I have to get my husband to tell me and sometimes he struggles to see too. Not a problem if you're a person who can feel their let down but sometimes I don't get any clues I'm leaking! I bought the flower stopper too which is so cute and perfect for protecting the milk from spilling.
The baby quite often knocks it off too (spilling precious milk or making a mess) so I have to hold it - so not exactly hands free despite the suction. This isn't a problem if you're expressing while away from baby but I have most success when he's feeding from the other side. If I'm just using it to relieve myself and not storing the milk, it's perfect!
All in all, for the price, it's worth having on your breastfeeding journey. Aldi does an identical item that's even cheaper if you're not sure about buying it ;-)
