"Ed Bacon's book has left me tingling with excitement. Living the habits of love he describes seems difficult at first, but then he offers real life examples of people doing just that, and what seemed far too idealistic begins to seem doable even by the likes of me." -Archbishop Desmond Tutu

"Ed Bacon's handbook for loving and living offers us practical ways of moving past the kind of fear-based thinking and destructive choices that cloud our hearts and keep us trapped in half-lived lives. Ed's exuberance and experience resound on every page, calling us joyfully to live the habits of love." -Elizabeth Lesser, Cofounder, Omega Institute
Author, Broken Open: How Difficult Times Can Help Us Grow

"Open this book and suddenly you're sitting in a pew or on a porch, mesmerized by stories and sermons you'll want your heart to memorize for life. They made me laugh and cry and want to be a better person." -Regina Brett, author of God Never Blinks and Be the Miracle

"Rev Ed Bacon is a wise, honest, and welcoming teacher who gently affirms that the power of love is always near and restorative, if we can meet its responsibility to live with an open heart. Whatever path you follow, this personal and universal book models the habits-very much in reach-by which we can ground our lives in love." -Mark Nepo, author of The Book of Awakening and Seven Thousand Ways To Listen

"Even after having read 8 Habits of Love cover to cover, I return to its pages everyday as I would to the company of a dear friend. With disarming transparency, Reverend Ed offers us stories, insight and practical guidance to create a contagion of love, a revolution of the heart." -Kim Rosen, author of Saved by a Poem: The Transformative Power of Words

"This very wise book is a powerful, personal and practical invitation to move beyond the fear-based life that marks so much of contemporary culture into a life grounded in the habits of love." -Marcus Borg, author of bestselling The Heart of Christianity

"Rector of All Saints church in Pasadena, Calif., Bacon discusses 21st-century spirituality and the critical role of love as a liberating, joy-filled and guiding force; he has "an unshakeable certainty that within each and every human being there lives a core of love and goodness." He offers eight simple habits-play, forgiveness, stillness, truth, candor, compassion, community, generosity-to change the way we think and behave. The habit of generosity opens hearts so one may give and receive. Practicing the habit of candor deepens relationships, and the stillness habit restores a calm confidence. The habit of truth causes us to challenge our assumptions about ourselves and others and leads to growth. Along with personal anecdotes, memories, and stories of soul survivors, Bacon interpolates the thoughts of poets, sages, scholars, and writers, such as the Dalai Lama, Thomas Merton, and Alice Walker. Readers who find a life-giving energy pulsing in these pages will pass this book on to those they love." -Publisher's Weekly

After reading the first two chapters of this book, the message that really hits home for me is the idea that fear is what causes so much anxiety, anger and chaos in our lives. Ed Bacon gives the reader relatable stories to illustrate his points as well as work studies to help accomplish each habit. All of this is done in the spirit of inclusiveness and grace. Anyone would benefit from this book!

It is clear that Ed Bacon's mission in life is to spread Jesus' message of love and inclusivity, especially in these polarized and troubled times. This book, 8 Habits of Love, does so with kindness and vigor. Although there will likely be many who will insist that theirs is the only way and that God is a Christian (by their definition), this book enthusiastically opens the door for much needed conversation. Like the words of the biblical phophets, Ed's words may be condemned by some in the present, but will serve as a guidepost for the future.

I remember "Rev Ed" from when he used to guest host Oprah's Soul Series: he was gregarious and receptive, human and intellectual, confident and humble. I was thrilled that he brought all of those qualities to his book on the 8 Habits of Love. I think in time we will see that this book has done nothing short of modernizing the commandments. Thou shalt be candid. Thou shalt be generous. Thou shalt be playful.... With this book, Ed has given me enough spiritual food for thought for a very, very long time.

This is the kind of book you will find yourself talking about constantly with your friends and colleagues. I can't tell you how often I think to myself, "Oh, I should get you to read the chapter on Forgiveness!" or "You're talking about Compassion--but you haven't understood HOW to show it," and even, "I'm giving you this book, you HAVE to read about Generosity." The habits are incredibly relevant and helpful in navigating every day life.

This is an impassioned, tender, insistent, thoughtful and thought-provoking book. Ed Bacon dares to reveal his most vulnerable self and invite us on this journey with him into the realm of love. He tells of his own turning points, and shares moving stories of people who struggle to find a way to connect with others, lead meaningful lives, repair damage to themselves or others, and reach out to help the disenfranchised. This book has a huge heart. It is life-changing.

While Bacon is a life-long minister, 8 Habits of Love can speak to anyone--religious or not--who wants to live with an open heart. You do not even need to believe in "God" to believe in the messages shared in this book. As Bacon says, he really is moved by a "radically inclusive" spirit and this is so refreshing.

In addition, Bacon references many deep thinkers throughout--from MLK Jr and Desmond Tutu, to Stephen Mitchell, Thomas Merton and Einstein--to underscore his theories. He doesn't shy away from pointing out how a life guided by fear-based thinking leads us to behave in inhuman ways. So while there is immense hope and positivity in this book, it is also painfully relevant to our tumultuous times.

I really appreciated the practical side of this book. It's not just about putting on rose-colored glasses.

LOVE. THIS. BOOK.
I have always been what has been termed, "A Questioning Believer" when it comes to defining myself as a Christian, and with anything or anyone that speaks of Christianity.
Having said that, I already knew that I would love this book when I heard that Ed Bacon was writing it. For many years, I have sporadically attended his sermons at All Saints in Pasadena, and I have always heard solid, honest, inspirational advice that resonates with what I truly believe is derived from the all-inclusive teachings of Jesus.
For me, Ed Bacon's suggestions at the end of each chapter are as important as following directions on a map in order to find the right destination without all the drama of getting lost. This book serves as a good map to The High Road; I know I'll be referring to it often and for the rest of my journey.

Ed Bacon's "8 Habits of Love" came into my life at just the right time. I had been struggling with an issue for quite some time. I needed to make a drastic change in my life to better align with my beliefs but I was afraid of the consequences of my action. This book was instrumental in me making these changes.

As I read about Generosity, I got in touch with that aspect of myself and the importance to honor and grow in that area. "The energy of love, of approaching life from your loving self, knows no limits."
As I was reminded of the importance of Stillness, I could hear the Spirit's, the Beloved's, guidance. "Stillness is pivotal in overcoming the sometimes subtle but invariably destructive power that chronic fear has over us."
And when I came to the chapter of Truth, it became very clear that I had to honor my Truth and with the habit of Candor, I had to take a leap of faith and break from my long-standing faith community and find a new one who celebrated ALL people, an inclusive spirit. I was finally able to negotiate the "forces of fear" and claim my "force of love."

The Habits of Play, Forgiveness, Compassion and Community can also play an integral part in our lives and Rev. Bacon writes with humor, authenticity, authority and conviction about integrating each of these 8 Habits into our lives. This is a MUST read book that will guide you into living in love, not fear.
