I watched the documentary before watching this movie. The movie seems to hold very true.

My grandfather was at Okinawa. He spoke of it to no one, until one summer day we were sitting together in 1997, just 2 years before he died, and he heard a slurry bomber going overhead (fire season). He stood up and scanned the skies. When the plane came into view, he said, "it's ours." Then he sat down and began to weep. I took his hands carefully in mine, his skin was so thin, and his hands were shaking. He looked at me and said, "these hands have killed." He then told me how his sister ship (he was a SeaBee) anchored at Okinawa took a kamikaze hit; and he told me of another time when they came under fire, he ran for a fox hole, but didn't make it - which was a good thing in a bad way, as the fox hole took a direct hit and all those inside died. And that was all he ever told me, and later I found out I was the only one he ever told anything of what happened to him in the war.

People who look at this movie for entertainment only, well just don't. This is more. It is truth, even in its gore and horror. This is about war, about one man who changed and touched hundreds of lives through generations. It's about conviction and bravery in extraordinary circumstances by ordinary men (and women). It isn't meant just to "entertain," it's meant to tell a story and help us remember. Freedom isn't free.

I was astounded! I finished the movie and the tears just flowed - it was an incredible portrayal of an amazingly courageous man who stared into the face of hell and wrangled a true miracle from the flames of death and destruction. "Just one more..." - and to maintain his convictions in the face of ridicule with such an intensity - his steadfast beliefs and his true integrity - he changed their minds. Point to note - NOT FOR CHILDREN!! They spare nothing in portraying war and how soldiers die. America should be honored to have had a son of such true conviction.

This was by far the greatest war movie I've ever seen since Saving Private Ryan. In fact it might've been the greatest war movie I have ever seen. Andrew Garfield gives an incredible performance, the story goes along at a perfect pace, and the action is some of the best you'll see on screen. As much as I loved Saving Private Ryan, a lot of it was fictitious. Of course the war was real but the characters and in fact Private Ryan himself was a fictional character. While Hacksaw Ridge on the other hand is all based in reality every character is based on a person who really lived through World War II. So in my opinion that makes Hacksaw Ridge a much more powerful film. This is truly one of those films that comes along every decade or two that will become the default answer for people's favorite film of all time. When you ask someone what their favorite film is you consistently hear Braveheart, Saving Private Ryan, Forest Gump, The Godfather, Citizen Kane, and get ready to hear Hacksaw Ridge more often as this film is seen by more people.

Having served in the military myself, the message this movie delivers is tenfold. While our people, all colors, are out fighting and looting in the streets, calling each other out, turning our skin colors into curse words, we have all but forgotten about love, loyalty, integrity to our faiths and beliefs without destroying the integrity of another's. We fought for the freedom of this country, but we never fought to set hate free across this land. This story is valid because it has heart, the thing we used to admire in each other. Hope it reminds everyone that wars were meant to stop hate not perpetuate it. And wars were meant to stop. One can not live a life at war. None of us can.

Not to be mised. Tough story to capture and depict on film, but these guys (Mel Gibson & cast) did as good a job as could be done. The film accurately captures a story that is near unbelievable, but true. I researched the true story and this film does a remarkably special job in putting it forth. Desmond Doss is a name that should be household. A very special person who accomplished virtual miracles under the most dire of circumstances. A story every American should know.

I admit that I decided to watch Hacksaw Ridge after I saw an ad featured for it in my Amazon Kindle. I even bought that film, despite wanting to rent another movie on Amazon. After watching the film, I am very glad that I purchased the movie and would watch it again for some of the following reasons; There is an enduring and touching love story between the characters of Desmond Doss (Andrew Garfield) and Dorothy Schutte (Teresa Palmer). Doss’s wife is even showing standing by him even after he is almost in danger of getting court-martialed for this beliefs. The film shows how the personality of Desmond Doss developed under the influence of his mom Bertha Doss (Rachel Griffiths) and his father Tom Doss (Hugo Weaving). Vince Vaughan makes an appearance in the film as Sergeant Howell, who becomes a significant part of the character development to Garfield’s Doss character. The end of the film shows among the following facts; Desmond Doss carried 75 wounded men to safety on Hacksaw Ridge. Doss was the first conscientious objector to receive the Medal of Honor. Desmond and Dorothy were married until her death in 1991. Desmond Doss passed away at the age of 87 in March 2006. Of course, there are more actors and actresses (as well as plot scenes) that factor a great deal into this film. However, I must refrain from saying more out of consideration for those who have yet to see the film.

Hands down the best war movie since Saving Private Ryan. Brutal depictions of the chaos of the Japanese phase of World War Two. What this man Doss did in this insanity is nothing short of amazing. Mr Gibson is a film maker on the level of Speilberg or Scorsese. Some weak performances though, I felt Vince Vaughn was miscast. Over all a truly moving film experience.

Excellent movie, the acting was great, the casting and production was equally great. I would have given it 10 stars. This is a movie that an intelligent, mature person can appreciate. It would be lost on the pseudo intellect and snow flakes in today's world. It is definitely worth the time watching. Time is too precious to waste on the mediocre.

Mercy! I watched this DVD this morning. Brilliant! Superb! Uplifting! Inspiring! I just realized only one shortcoming. Why do we only award Medal of Honors for those who take life rather than saving lives. Doss is the highest example of why more Medal of Honors should be awarded to those who save lives. Mr. Doss, thank you for your gifts
