Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 3—The protagonist of this delightful book is a young girl who has a favorite dress she wears on Tuesday, her favorite day of the week. When she discovers one morning that her "favoritest dress" is too short, she complains to her mother who tells her that instead of making mountains out of molehills, she should try making "molehills out of mountains!" Her mother turns the outgrown dress into a beautiful new ruffly shirt, which then becomes her "favoritest shirt" for her new favorite day of the week, Wednesday. The story continues until there are eventually just scraps left and the girl uses them to make a picture of the original dress that she can enjoy every day. This upbeat story will resonate with young listeners who share a fondness for a particular piece of clothing. The rhythmic narration of Bahni Turpin brings the bubbly tale to life. VERDICT Fun and engaging, this will resonate with children of all ages. Recommended for public library collections.—Amy Joslyn, Fairport Public Library, NY --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

My 4 year old granddaughter absolutely loves this book with the sewing and redesign theme. The illustrations are lovely, and the story has a nice rhythm. She and I have been sewing garments all winter, and she will take my scraps and make her own creations. If you love to sew and want to encourage the next generation, please purchase this book for all the young boys and girls in your life. Yes, even my 7 year old grandson loved it.

With two snips and two sews, a young girl's mother reinvents her daughter's favorite dress into smaller pieces of fashion as she grows. From a new shirt to a tank top to a skirt to a scarf, to new socks and a hair bow, this young girl realizes that nothing lasts forever, but favorite things can be changed and used again. This picture book will appeal to children ages 4-7, especially those with favoritest things.

This book is so amazing!! My kids love it, too (3 y.o. boy, 5 y.o. girl)! I sew and they want to sew, too, so it's so much fun to read. The story is cute, the illustrations are charming and sewing themed. Buy it. I was also so happy to have a brown girl as the main character, but not have the story be about that. She's just a girl who loves her dress with a mom who sews. Awesome. AND it's a parent's dream combo for a kids' book...

Here are all the things you can teach with this book:
ecology-reusing/recycling
creativity-turning something into something else, drawing, sketching
parenting-sharing a hobby, trusting a parent
fashion-designing and creating
sewing-working with a mechanical tool
math-rescaling size, estimating, proportions, fractions
general life skills-intiative, individuality, joy, confidence, motivation

This book is so sweet for so many reasons - first and foremost, the illustrations are absolutely beautiful. My 7 year old traces the whimsical pictures with her fingers as we read. The story is equally sweet, showing a girl can repurpose and reuse one of her favorite things, her pretty pink dress, and her mother teaches her how to get crafty and think creatively. My girls ask for this book every night, definitely one of our absolute favorites.

I loved this book. Sweet story, beautiful illustrations! My little sister (10) couldn't stop looking at it. I really appreciated the opportunity to give my sister a book about a girl who looks like her without the theme of the book having anything to do with race. Really refreshing and cute!

This wonderful book teaches many lessons; recycling, design, creativity, character development and diversity. It uses wonderful language; mountains and molehills, declared, distraught, overwrought just to name a few. It also introduces days of the week and seasons. The illustrations, by Julia Denos bring sewing, clothing, seasons and children to life. We love this book and recommend it for classrooms, silent reading, after school programs and libraries. This African American girl and her mother are a treasure in themselves.
