4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 29,505 ratings

The author of In an Instant delivers a heart-pounding and emotional roller-coaster ride of self-discovery in the tradition of Thelma and Louise.

Needing to escape her abusive marriage, Hadley flees with her two kids, knowing it might be her only chance. A woman who can’t even kill a spider, Hadley soon finds herself pushed to the limits as she fights to protect her family.

Grace, new mother of baby Miles, desperately wants to put her rough past behind her for good, but she finds it impossible when her path crosses with Hadley’s, and her quest for a new start quickly spirals out of control and turns into a terrifying flight for survival.

Stronger together than apart, the two find their fates inextricably entwined, and as the danger closes in, each must decide how much she is willing to risk for the other.

A powerful story of self-discovery, Hadley and Grace is the heart-racing tale of two women facing insurmountable odds, racing to stay one step ahead of the trouble that is chasing them, and discovering new kinds of love and family along the way.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Redfearn (In an Instant) tips a hat to Thelma & Louise in this entertaining, fast-paced romp about an unlikely friendship formed during a heist…Redfearn keeps the reader rooting for her engaging heroines. This rollicking tale of crime, friendship, and love delivers the goods.” Publishers Weekly

“Redfearn’s latest (after In an Instant) starts as a domestic drama but quickly morphs into an unexpected Thelma & Louise–style adventure. The quickly moving story and well-drawn characters will keep readers turning pages even if the madcap road chase and happy ending seem unlikely.” Library Journal

“Redfearn’s characters are sympathetic and appealing, and she highlights the strengths that both women bring to life-or-death decisions, as well as the ways the journey transforms everyone involved. This is tense, affecting relationship fiction with elements of domestic suspense, ideal for readers of Sally Hepworth and Kimberly Belle.” Booklist

“A thrilling novel from start to finish featuring two strong female characters. Just when you [think] things can’t get any worse, they do, but twists and turns make this a great story right to the very end.” Red Carpet Crash

Hadley and Grace is a novel that defies easy categorization…This is also a novel that runs the full gamut of emotion, from horror to joy…Hadley and Grace pulses with energy and urgency, sucking us in fast and carrying us along at a swift pace, making it a fantastic choice for any upcoming book clubs.” —Criminal Element

“Three children, two women, and one goal: freedom. Suzanne Redfearn takes us on a wild and highly entertaining cross-country romp with two lovable female fugitives hell-bent on starting anew. I cheered, I whooped, I cringed and cowered…this book captures every emotion. If you’re looking for a fun, fast-paced story with hilariously humane characters you grow to love, look no further than Hadley and Grace. Move over, Thelma and Louise…Hadley and Grace have arrived!” —Lori Nelson Spielman, New York Times bestselling author of The Life List

“What a ride! Better get comfortable, because you will not be able to put this book down once you pick it up. The action hurtles forward at the speed of a bullet train, capturing the reader with not only plot but also characters who take us captive as we follow along on their wild journey. I adored both Hadley and Grace and the crazy crew of children, and I was rooting for them every second. One of the best books I’ve read in ages!” —Barbara O’Neal, bestselling author of When We Believed in Mermaids

“Buckle in tight for the high-speed adventures of Hadley and Grace, the unlikely duo of diaper bag–toting outlaws who will go to harrowing lengths to protect their children. Full of humor, heartbreak, and charming acts of kindness, the twists in Redfearn’s road trip tale will have you dashing through its pages to the unpredictable finale.” —Glendy Vanderah, Wall Street Journal bestselling author of Where the Forest Meets the Stars

“I always enjoy a book that is different from what else is out in the market. Hadley and Grace was just that kind—an exciting read where every chapter left me with a ‘What will happen next?’ feeling. Two women on the run, three kids in tow, but not all is as it seems. Filled with heart, suspense, adventure, and thrills, this is a story that would equally feel at home on a screen.” —Camille Di Maio, bestselling author of The Memory of Us

Hadley and Grace is as much an adventure story of two women on the road as it is an exploration of the families we create versus the families we leave behind, and the journeys we take to find our true potential.” —Kristin Fields, author of A Lily in the Light

From the Publisher

As embarrassing as it is for me to admit, I have never actually seen Thelma & Louise. But having read Suzanne Redfearn’s latest novel, a riveting family drama that is loosely inspired by the classic film, I’m now convinced more than ever that I’ve been missing out.

Hadley and Grace is a romp of a ride, following two uniquely authentic, equally lovable protagonists as they seek fresh starts for their fractured families. Taking these resilient women (and their endearing children) on a road trip of epic proportions, this action-packed tale has a little of all my favorite genres, wrapped into one page-turning saga.

Both women are fleeing their old lives for different reasons but are inextricably linked by the same dangerous man and an overwhelming need to protect their children. What begins as a reluctant partnership of necessity slowly morphs into a story of true friendship and the meaning of family along the way.

With this novel, the bestselling author of
In an Instant delivers a heart-pounding yet uplifting novel sure to touch the hearts of readers around the world. So, buckle up and get ready for one wild journey of self-discovery and second chances.

Mixed review, but you will be entertained.

To write a review that will help other readers determine if HADLEY AND GRACE is a book they will enjoy, requires that I cover both the good (even excellent) aspects of the story, along with what disappointed me (the bad).

First let me make it clear that I actually really enjoyed HADLEY AND GRACE and finished it with a big smile on my face. I won't be forgetting the story any time soon. I whipped right through it, and can honestly say it was NEVER boring. The author, Suzanne Redfern, is extremely gifted. She has created several characters, strikingly different from each other, that I fell in love with. The grand criminal adventure is carried almost entirely by the character development, and the way in which two women, and 3 children, band together, in desperation, to become a family of sorts. If you enjoy poignant stories about human nature and the ability of resiliency to overcome great obstacles, this book is for you.I

I picked HADLEY AND GRACE because I LOVED LOVED LOVED the author's novel, IN AN INSTANT. There is a real danger for any author who is expected to "top" a previous novel, that sets an impossibly high bar for everything they write after. HADLEY AND GRACE is not nearly as good as IN AN INSTANT. (Just compare the quality of the two book titles. One is a terrible title for a book and the other one is darn near perfect!).

The main problem I had with HADLEY AND GRACE was the eye rolling implausibility of it all. While the relationships, and the emotions that accompany them, feel quite genuine, the circumstances themselves, would never ever happen, in the real world. Real people don't meet and hook up (partner, become friends, lend their vehicles, or have sex) with strangers in anything near the way things unfold in the story. Until you really start to know and love the characters, you, like me, may be indulging in a little eye rolling yourself. It is REALLY hard to suspend disbelief enough go along with a couple of the more ridiculous scenes in the book.

HADLEY AND GRACE is charming though, and it is one of those books that keeps getting better and better. There is a lot to be said for finishing a book smiling, and wishing you knew these people in real life.

Don't read it because you loved Thelma and Louise or skip it, because you hated it. It could have just as easily been compared to Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kidd-- except Hadley and Grace are a current version, raised to hero status by the news media, social media and an adoring public, who are willing to overlook their criminal behavior. The media publish stories calling them "Mama Bears" and comparing them to Thelma and Louise (a story the book's author was inspired by.)

I stopped reading about 1/3 of the way through. It was just too much like Thelma and Louise. When they were talking about locking the FBI agent in the trunk, that was enough for me. I might should have kept reading and maybe it would have gotten better. I do recommend reading for someone else but it just wasn't for me.

Hadley and Grace is by Suzanne Redfearn. This book is really good. Once you get into it, it is difficult to put down. You have to find out what happens to Hadley and Grace.
Hadley has had enough of marriage to Frank. He has gotten too controlling and to easy to anger. He has forgotten that they married because they were in love and that she deserved better. The chance to take Mattie and run is just too great. She has to take her nephew, Skipper, back to his mother. Hadley and Frank have had him since birth. Skipper has a very low IQ but is the sweetest little boy around. Everyone loves him. Mattie and Skipper have a great relationship and she can settle him down when no one else can. They will take him to her sister and then run. She has the car packed and everything is ready to go, except one thing and she can take care of that on the way. Leaving tonight will be easier on Skipper as he will be sleeping. That is, if Frank agrees.
As soon as they get in the car, Mattie asks if they are ever coming back. She has seen her Mom put her Grandmother’s apron in her bag. That is the one thing Hadley would want to keep. Mattie is all for not coming back. She has become afraid of her Dad’s anger. So far, he hasn’t hurt anyone; but it is coming. Hadley stops at a hotel near the interstate and leaves Mattie and Skipper there while she finishes getting things together. She heads to Frank’s business office. She knows he has a safe here and keeps money in it. She plans to take cash so he can’t trace them. However, as she hunts in the office, she can’t find the safe. Then she hears a noise out in the office.
Grace has worked for Frank for a short time; but knows it won’t last. However, since her husband, Jimmy, has a gambling problem, she needs the job. Maybe being back in the army will keep Jimmy from gambling. Meanwhile, Grace has worked very hard to get a contract with a man downtown to rent his property for parking. Frank promised her a commission if she got the contract signed. However, when she takes the contract to him, Frank pretends the promise was never made. If that isn’t bad luck enough, she has to stop to get gas on the way to pick up her son, Miles. Her credit card doesn’t work! Jimmy has maxed it out gambling again! Later that night, when Miles is screaming from colic, she puts him in the car and drives to the office. She knows Frank will fire her on Tuesday, so she is going to get into his safe and take her commission! He owes it to her. However, someone is here?
When Hadley and Grace get together, they have both the safe and the combination. What they get is a huge surprise when they open the safe! It is FULL of money. Because Hadley had sprained her ankle, Grace takes her to the hotel where they count the money and split it. While Hadley is feeding Miles, Grace ends up going to sleep and sleeping all night. The next morning, she takes Hadley to the emergency room for her ankle. Then, the re al fun begins. It is Thelma and Louise all over again, except there are now three minors along for the ride.
The book just gets better from this point on. Will they get away or will they end up in jail?

5.0 out of 5 stars A gripping read
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 9, 2021
This book grabbed me from the get-go and didn't ease up from there. This is a wonderful read along the lines of Thelma & Louise but with kids in tow and less violence, but it's gripping and entertaining all the same.

I loved each and every character, and the author did a fantastic job of bringing alive Skipper, who has to be my absolute fave. He enhances the tale so much. While some coincidences do occur to bring the different folks together and trigger the unplanned 'fugitive fleeing', they are entirely believable.

Some lines that stood out for me:

'Boston has weather, but it has a more clear opinion of it-fall, winter, spring, summer-all of it crisp, clear, and breathtaking.'

'Then, like making the wrong move in Jenga, she pulled out the wrong brick-made a single horrible wrong move that sent three worlds tumbling.'

'Coincidence is not something Grace beleives in [...] it seems to her that some hidden connectivity existed in that moment that profoundly influenced their lives, intertwining their fates and bringing them to this remarkable place and time.'

And remarkable it is. The tension of this fast-paced read is infused with wonderful humour and very real human interactions. I could not put this book down and read it in two sittings. I only stopped to sleep. The ending is well rounded and nicely tied off.

You have to read this book. As you may have guessed by now, it gets a resounding five stars from me. I'd give it ten if I could! :)

Well she did!!! How would i describe this book? Thriller? Suspense? Touch of Romance? Adventure? It really has all of these elements and also a really brilliant underlying story.
Skipper shines light the brightest star.

Accessed through Primes pre-release perk.

I enjoyed this book, slightly out of my genre, but it has a nice writing style and quite a nice pace.

I hadnt seen comparisons of Thelma and Louise before I read and to be honest I didn't find them relevant even after, other than the authors note acknowledges she drew inspiration from it! The story works for itself-though like most has inspiration from somewhere!

Found most of the characters likeable but Hadleys growth along
the story seems to have stalled at the end a bit and that's a shame given what is sacrificed along the way. I also found the ending a little rushed in coming compared to the rest of the book; and Jimmy saving the day jarred only a little (i guess itwas needed to let her forgive him, but given she's so independent the rest of the time....)I wasn't completely sold on Hadleys reaction to the news she receives toward the end. Annoying some point for me, you don't find out what happens to the dog either!(unless I missed it somewhere!)

Growth of the female characters growth was fairly easy to follow and see.

Its fairly light reading and I was able to pick up and put down easily. Would be a fairly easy one sitting read.

I'd read others by the same author again.
