It's a world exactly like ours except for one thing, the way babies are born. Mothers give birth to a daughter who in 14 years will give birth to the mother's real child and when the symbiotic relationship is severed at birth the "bridge daughter" dies. This isn't because of any changes is the world it's just been that way since the beginning of time.
Hanna Driscoll has twin bridge daughters, Cynthia who is carrying Hanna's son and Ruby who is carrying a daughter. When an activist approaches her daughter's trying them to have an illegal procedure that will stop them from having the babies and allowing the girls to keep living what will Hanna do? There's lots of twists and turns in this story and kept my interest till the end.
