I bought a portable air conditioner instead of a window unit because of two reasons: 1 - my apartment windows will not accomodate a unit and 2 - I didn't want to limit use to one room. I am always hesistant ordering expensive, heavy items online because very often they are packaged and shipped poorly, but this unit came and a very thick box with the appropriate padding and came in perfect condition. Instructions are brief and thorough and everything you need. Very little assembly is required, just hooking up the exhaust tube and knowing how to fit the panel into your window.
There are three modes on this unit: fan, Air conditioning, and dehumidifier. I have not used the dehumidifier and dont plan on it so this is not a feature I can rate. The fan and AC work great. This is a very powerful unit and even the low setting is a bit more than a low setting should be (slight concern if all you need is a very dim breeze, etc). The cooling is instant and works wonders. This being an 8,000BTU unit, it is quite powerful and great for small to medium sized rooms. Another bonus is that the display turns off a minute after you make any changes. I enjoy this feature because the unit will not light up a room when it's dark, which is not the case for other units (AC and heaters alike). This is a drip/tray free system - this means for the AC unit, you never need to empty water from the unit (not the case for dehumidifier). Lots of units to this now, but it's a great feature to not have to worry about this.
The main downside to this unit is that there is no auto-turn-off when the room meets a desired temperature. I relate to a space heaters that turn off when the room reaches a desired temperature. This unit does not have this feature, which is a shame. Then again, I dont think any window or portable AC unit has this feature - they all run continuously. There is a sleep timer, which is nice, but my concern is keeping the room at a specific temperature. While I can set the cooling temp higher to maintin the same temperature that I desire, I find it to be a waste of energy to have it run all the time verse only when it's needed.
Overall I am very happy with this unit. It's sleek, not too heavy for being a powerful machine, easy to roll and move, and it gets the job done. If you are interested in a portable AC unit for a small or medium-sized room (might be more power than you need for a small room so research BTU and room size), this should be a top contender on your list.
*easy to transport
*Display screen doesn't stay lit
*manual states to never use an extension cord & to plug directly into the wall, so you are limited to the few feet of cord it comes with.
*there is no room-temp auto shut-off (only sleep timer)
*most likely a little work will be needed to secure panel in window (blocks/tape, etc).
*low setting is still pretty powerful, would be nice to have something lesser
That's really my only complaint, though. We use it in our second floor bedroom, which is always about 5° warmer then the main floor (only one duct up, and no space for another). I'd previously had a 14,000 BTU window unit in, which did great job cooling the room - much faster than this one, actually - but then made it impossible to get a draft going on those nice nights where it cools down. We only have two windows - one on each end - so a window unit just made a draft impossible.
So for our purposes, this one is great, because it's easy to insert into the window and kick on, and then remove when we want to seal up the room or open the windows.
If you need more distance from the window, by yourself a dryer duct and some aluminum duct tape at any home improvement store, and just tape on the duct to give yourself some more length.
It's been about a month now since the air conditioner quit working, still no answers from customer service on what to do.
