Glad I did! This thing has been *perfect* for my needs.
First, it's small enough to sit on my kitchen "peninsula" (no upper cabinets), in a corner out of the way. And it doesn't weigh a lot, either, so wresting it from the front porch into the house and up on the counter wasn't a herculean task (I'm a single older female with a bad back, so that should give you a clue as to how easy this thing is to move around.)
Second, there's not a lot of room in it, but it's enough to store the few chilled things I need to have on hand (most things I use can go in the big freezer, thawed as needed in the mini-fridge).
and Third -- Right out of the box, it worked perfectly. I have it set at the factory-recommended setting, and it freezes ice in the freezer compartment, while maintaining a steady 36 degrees in the refrigerator compartment. I've had it now for 3 weeks, and I still haven't needed to defrost it. (New fridge is due for delivery next week ... )
This might be just the right size for a dorm situation -- it's so quiet I don't hear it at all, and I sit within 6 feet of it most of the time.
Even after my new fridge arrives, I'll probably keep this in the guest room for visitors to use.
Definitely a good buy!
It's quiet, other than some dripping and ticking sounds once in awhile. My coworkers didn't notice it.
The thermostat doesn't need to be set very high. I had it on 6, I think, whatever it shipped as, and when I put a bag of baby carrots under the freezer compartment, they froze! When I turned it down, it got water all over the place, but everything's fine now set at 3.
So, I would have preferred this without the freezer, but the non-freezer one was around $40 more and hey, beggars can't be choosers! It's just what I was looking for.
it's a Haier
gets very cold
freezer is a good size
freezer freezes, as well as the refrigerator depending on the coldness setting.
top shelf is deep and goes all the way to the back of the refrigerator
adjusting feet for unbalanced surfaces
the cooling component look like quality,
and should last a long time just like my other Haier appliances.
door shelves are nothing special, and you have to be careful
to open the door slowly so the items don't fall
bottom shelf is shallow
I prefer the blower type of compact refrigerators.
cannot fit a lot of taller wider objects inside
the top was very warm to the touch, but I am not sure why yet.
Update-I haven't experiences this since the initial experience of plugging this in.
I'll keep you updated if it fails or the experience remains positive.
I bought this solely on the name, since I've had good experiences with Haier appliances in the past, and none of them have failed yet.
Update January 16, 2012: I have a short container that I wanted to fit on the bottom shelf, but wouldn't fit. I had to remove the side door bar that is supposed to hold the door items in place. I really never had any use for the side door, so I now have more space on the bottom shelf. The metal bar is easily removed and easily replaced.
I now have fixed a major concern I had with the shallow bottom shelf. This may be a problem for those that want to store liter bottles though.
With all my qualms regarding the interior space, this refrigerator/freezer is ICE cold, and is so quiet that it's almost silent. I do use the freezer as well as the refrigerator. In the morning, I bring in cans of drinks at room temperature, and by lunch time the drink has a few ice crystals, and if I leave the cans in for 3 or more hours the drink is completely frozen.
I am still in the process, and it is nearing a 2-month experience. Unsat. I’ll provide an update soon, based on the results of my latest phone call this morning.
