Editorial Reviews

One of the key figures in the development of be-bop, Al Haig's piano has graced some of the best recording sessions in all of jazz. Presented here is his masterful 1954 Esoteric release, simply titled "Al Haig Trio," often described as a highlight in the career of one of the best pianists in modern jazz history. On these recordings Al turns some time-worn standards into be-bop adventures, assisted by Bill Crow on bass and Lee Abrams on drums. All selections newly remastered.

When sold by Amazon.com, this product will be manufactured on demand using CD-R recordable media. Amazon.com's standard return policy will apply.

By Mike Tarrani HALL OF FAMETOP 50 REVIEWER on August 5, 2013
Format: Audio CD
Since this was recorded in 1954 I did not have high expectations of the sound quality. Not only has the remastering worked miracles the mix is amazing. That this was remastered and mixed from circa 1954 recording technology with probably only two tracks is impressive.

Listen to the sound samples. Haig's playing is lush when required and exhibits an ease in any tempo. I've always contended that he never got the recognition he deserved, and the tracks on this album are evidence of his talent.

What makes this even more enjoyable is the accompaniment. Bill Crow's bass is distinct, but where it should be in the mix. He is right there with every turn Haig makes. And Lee Abrams' drumming - especially his brushwork - perfectly fits the mood and music on this album. As a side note, if you are a drummer this is an album to study for the brushwork alone.

This album was recorded in NYC on March 13, 1954. The track sequence on the album is identical to the recording sequence. In fact there were nine additional tracks recorded during what must have been a marathon session, some of which wound up on an extended version of this album titled Jazz Will-O-The Wisp that you may want to consider before making a final purchase decision.
