I was very happy with this unique product and have used it with various group of students. It's excellent for incorporating into poetry units, and it's a great hands on activity for all students. It also helped improve the quality and vocabulary level of my students' Haikus and inspired them to use more advanced vocabulary. Excellent for an ESL or English student. My experiences were primarily with middle school students.

My one advice to the developers, is to use all sides of the cubes. Currently one side of each cube is blank, in order to create a Haiku "square." However, there's no purpose to this activity, and the blank sides decrease the number of words available. I did appreciate that the words on the cubes are organized by part of speech, and these cubes could also be used for some parts of speech activities.

I would definitely recommend this product to anyone teaching poetry or looking for an engaging educational tool for children or language learners.

The idea is quite clever: interactive cubes used to inspire the creation of tangible poetry. I bought this thinking it would something we could do as a family, or even something that could be a gift to an older elementary classroom. When I think of haiku, I think of an appreciation of the tiny details of nature, reflection, mindfulness, quietness.

There are words present in Haikubes that fit, what I think of as, a traditional interpretation of haiku: leaves, dreaming, journey, grace, marvel, following, and glorious.

There are also words present that make me think that maybe the creator wanted it to be a party game: thugs, screwed, sucker, ass, hump, #@&*#!!, anal, mouthful, and killed. Imagine what kind of haikus elementary students could come up with using those cubes...

I think somewhere between the original idea and the final product, Forrest-Pruzan got a bit lost. Maybe they should consider different themes for their boxes of cubes: one being more traditional where you can create haikus with your children that would make your grandmother proud, and one for adults only who, after a few beers, get a hankering to write poetry.

I have written haiku since the third grade and I'm 59 years old ...
I have found these to be a "fun" addition to my creative process ... and they look great on my desk too!

It can also be used as a simple word game ...
Or to arrange a sentence to contemplate for the day.
Sometimes just one word can be chosen to represent the day ahead or the day before.

I got this for my niece for her 9th birthday thinking a word game would be a great idea. I read the highlighted reviews, at the time, and figured it would be great. However, I got a call from my sister in law a few days later letting me know there are inappropriate words for kids. I then read more reviews, and others have had this problem, too, I just didn't read those reviews. Ooops! Seems like a great idea for adults and maybe older teens, but not for kids. The quality and look are nice, though. It does seem a bit silly to include words that are not family-friendly. I don't think it would be any less fun to play, and it would definitely appeal to a wider audience (and not surprise those who don't know). It should say in the product description that this is not for young children.

I bought a set of Haikubes this fall and took them to Europe on a trip with me. They are not exactly the lightest gift to carry around for 3 weeks but were worth every ounce. The game is hilarious and fun and engages all kinds of people - poets and non poets alike. I pulled it out at Thanksgiving in the old US of A and had a very enthusiastic response as well. The game appeals to a huge range of people and brings out the most surprising creativity. My only recommendation is that you record all of the Haikus on paper after the writer reads them aloud to the group. You will not want to forget the thoughts and humor that your friends and family have come up with!
