I love these. As a fan of writing journals, redacted poetry, and magnetic poetry; I thought that I already had all the solutions for writers block. These are fun by yourself or with a friend. They are solid and very well made. Worth the price.
I was very happy with this unique product and have used it with various group of students. It's excellent for incorporating into poetry units, and it's a great hands on activity for all students. It also helped improve the quality and vocabulary level of my students' Haikus and inspired them to use more advanced vocabulary. Excellent for an ESL or English student. My experiences were primarily with middle school students.
My one advice to the developers, is to use all sides of the cubes. Currently one side of each cube is blank, in order to create a Haiku "square." However, there's no purpose to this activity, and the blank sides decrease the number of words available. I did appreciate that the words on the cubes are organized by part of speech, and these cubes could also be used for some parts of speech activities.
I would definitely recommend this product to anyone teaching poetry or looking for an engaging educational tool for children or language learners.
I bought a set of Haikubes this fall and took them to Europe on a trip with me. They are not exactly the lightest gift to carry around for 3 weeks but were worth every ounce. The game is hilarious and fun and engages all kinds of people - poets and non poets alike. I pulled it out at Thanksgiving in the old US of A and had a very enthusiastic response as well. The game appeals to a huge range of people and brings out the most surprising creativity. My only recommendation is that you record all of the Haikus on paper after the writer reads them aloud to the group. You will not want to forget the thoughts and humor that your friends and family have come up with!
I purchased these as a present for a poet. She loves them! They are fun to play with, but also great if you have writers block. One side of the cube is blank so you can use the box as a display case as well. Most of the word choices are fun and modern; some are a little weird for haikus (hmmm and *#%!) but most of the words are good. I love that they included -esque and -ly to made the cubes more versatile. All in all the whole idea is well thought out and executed.
My 7 year old grand daughter and I had much fun making up poetry and stories when I purchased these as a family Christmas gift. It was a great bonding experience doing this with her, and surely expanded our minds in the process. My son was disappointed that the words did not jump out at him as they had when we first encountered Haikubes in another setting last summer. He said the words were different, so perhaps it was another version or the product was revised. I enjoyed them each time.
The idea is quite clever: interactive cubes used to inspire the creation of tangible poetry. I bought this thinking it would something we could do as a family, or even something that could be a gift to an older elementary classroom. When I think of haiku, I think of an appreciation of the tiny details of nature, reflection, mindfulness, quietness.
There are words present in Haikubes that fit, what I think of as, a traditional interpretation of haiku: leaves, dreaming, journey, grace, marvel, following, and glorious.
There are also words present that make me think that maybe the creator wanted it to be a party game: thugs, screwed, sucker, ass, hump, #@&*#!!, anal, mouthful, and killed. Imagine what kind of haikus elementary students could come up with using those cubes...
I think somewhere between the original idea and the final product, Forrest-Pruzan got a bit lost. Maybe they should consider different themes for their boxes of cubes: one being more traditional where you can create haikus with your children that would make your grandmother proud, and one for adults only who, after a few beers, get a hankering to write poetry.
I got this for my nephew for Christmas. He built a castle out of the cubes, then read the castle out loud. We laughed, playing with them for an hour. It's like an elevated mad libs!!
Two stars for quality: solid dice with the words etched instead of merely printed.
I'm a HUGE fan of Rory's Story Cubes, and was hoping this item would be similar. No dice.
My chief complaint is word choice. You're far better off sticking with those silly online poetry generators--or better yet, give Rory's cubes a try. I have endless fun with those.
