As I stated in another review about my granddaughter (10 years old) and her stage of discovering all the different textures of her hair/hair styles, I bought this book to address the awkwardness of her wanting me to talk to her mom (my daughter) about her getting a "perm". At the time, my granddaughter's hair was medium length and thick- yet she was going that that awkward stage of noticing the other girl's hair and styles. Thankfully, I found this book (and a few others) and we had a reading session including questions/answers. Well, I guess the session helped! Although, she always wore braids, ponytails and afro puffs, she appears to be more comfortable with her hair texture and styles. So thankful, there are books that so the beauty of "our hair" and now our girls can avoid that horrible stage of wanting "good hair".

This review is about the printing, not the book "Big Hair, Don't Care"--which is a very cute book.

I often buy books like this and just hand them to my daughter to read. I am SO GLAD I didn't this time. In the middle of this book, an entire different book is printed. It's called "Mommy and Daddy want to F...." It is HORRIBLE. It explains exactly how to have intercourse in a disturbing rhymey fashion. It references pedophilia. It uses every disgusting analogy or phrase you can think of or hopefully have never heard of. This is NOT a children's book, even though it has illustrations and it rhymes.

This awful misprint is not the author's fault. I feel bad leaving a 1 star review, I just don't know how else I can let people know. If you buy this book, beware---look through it before you hand it off to your kids!

UPDATE: We were contacted by both Amazon and the Author of this book. Both were very apologetic, supportive, and kind. Amazon requested the book back, and they did a full investigation as to how this happened. They determined it was a single instance misprint, and verified that there were no other misprints. They sent me a correct copy right away. While I wouldn't expect this ever to happen again with this book, my advice is to always scan through (or even better, READ) the books you get for your children before you give them to your children.

Bought this for my 2 year old son, as he's just becoming aware of his hair etc. He has big hair and it will get bigger and we wanted to get a book that demonstrated something positive about his hair (as combing can often be a negative experience). The prose is simple, ideal for young toddlers, and the artwork is minimalist, again ideal for a focus on the subject. The font is bold and of a good size (about 36 grade in Word to compare) on white plain background. There's also a page which features a number of different common Afro hairstyles, which my son was able to pick out which looked the most like his, and learn the words for them. Now he points to his hair, quoting lines from the book! It's also nice to see a book with a main character with similar complexion to him.
The negatives I'd drop a star for: it's a paperback and a bit flimsy, so easy for a toddler to rip, although easy enough to repair with tape. I also didn't like that the illustrator chose to sign their tag in really conspicuous places on each page, this could have been smaller or placed in different places rather than more times than not, in the centre of the book.
A solid short storybook to start a toddler or young child with, suitable for male or female youngsters.
