A lot of bang for the buck!
on September 19, 2010
After using Weller irons for years for many amateur radio projects and building a Heathkit TV years ago, I was used to the long heat up times, the clunky cord and the wire coil holder. I now feel like I have been delivered from all of that with the Hakko solder station. The reason I decided to bite the bullet and spend more $ was from all the reviews I read here and everyone was right on! It is the best money ever spent for this kind of a tool. I recommend getting any extra tips at the Hakko USA site using their 800 number. There is quite a selection there and I now have several size tips depending on the job at hand, nice!
I just finished assembly of a QRP HF transceiver and had to get the 900M-T-1.2D chisel tip, which was slightly smaller than the tip that comes on the iron but made a lot of difference soldering to the smaller pads on the circuit board. Temperature control is great with fast recovery time too. The sponge that comes with the stand works fine for keeping the tip clean but a little rosin flux would be nice to have around as well. The way the stand is designed makes it so easy getting the iron in and out of it's receptacle, and the stand stays put, and the cord is much more flexible than anything I've ever used before. If you are doing small work the fine solder is a must and the Global 5x diopter magnifier light is great for us age challenged folks.
So I join with the other reviewer who said "Just buy it", you won't be sorry, now I am looking for other projects to do just because soldering became that much easier.
