Product description

These irons offer a compact, lightweight design with a slender handle for a comfortable grip. Rod-type ceramic heater provides high insulation and reduces the handle-to-tip distance for faster soldering with a minimum of motion. The special alloy heating element is printed in the alumina ceramic insulating layer, then sintered to the ceramic main body, completely sealing the heating element from the air, protecting it from oxidation.

25w Hakko Dash, great for the inexperienced hobbyist...

New to soldering, at first attempting to just change a few nes/snes batteries. I wanted to fix a few problem connections in an older set of 100rms watt pioneer shop stereo speakers as well, and potentially delve deeper into something I thought I may enjoy as I would prefer to fix anything to discarding it. I did some research, I actually did quite a lot of research as I do like to get the most bang for my buck, and wanted to know what I'd need to start out with. I purchased the 25 watt Hakko dash taking into consideration that according to many diy instruction from people who seemed to be proficient enough, 25w would be more than enough for any pcb work, and smaller wiring (i.e. video game controller wires and adapter cables). The census I gathered was that the "big brand," which was the go-to brand for many hobbyists and professionals for many many years could sell their product (now apparently, to many, inferior and for many many years had been made in the U.S.) based solely on their name. Unfortunately for me, I didn't know what to look for other then them. The first thing other than the quality I was looking for (Hakko being manufactured in Japan) was the apparent consistency and availability of replacement tips. I could even find tips available at reasonable prices here in Canada (although I purchased the iron from amazon.com as well the two different tips from a great supplier in the U.S.). The other thing I considered, was well, if I did indeed end up burning out the heating element which I don't believe I will anytime in the foreseeable future, was would I be able to purchase another at the same reasonable cost as the first. Seemed cost effective.

To be honest, I can't provide the kind of detail an experienced electronics engineer could, I can't comment on many aspects of this iron because I've only used very cheap ones in the past which pale in comparison. I could say that I would recommend this to anyone who may have the gumption to replace their nes/snes batteries themself, if only to replay a game 20 years later, or are looking for something that gets hot quick because they want the replacement audio system their installing in their car to never have a connection issue with electrical tape. Worth the money for an iron made in Japan.

This soldering iron is pretty amazing. Way better than the Wal-Mart ones I was using. Solid construction overall. The cord is extremely rugged, I'm not afraid of it accidentally ripping out like the Wal-Mart irons I used. The screw lock attachment at the bottom to undo the tip is also a much better mechanism compared to the tips that are held on by a screw, which had a tendency to strip out and break due to heating/cooling effects. The tip is also very robust. The pencil tips I've used on other irons did not last long. It transfers heat very effectively and the solder flows nicely with this iron. It does not take long to heat up either. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who solders light work like I do (computer wires, LEDs, etc.)

So far this has worked fairly well for me. Im new to soldering, and still need to learn a few things. I had issues where it wouldn't melt my solder, but after cleaning it and doing another thing or two to it, it seemed to work well. I just wonder if this thing gets hot enough. My solder tends to ball up at the end, and not drip off like its suppose to. I end up having to touch most of my projects with the iron to even get the solder to stay on the project. That might just be my lack of knowledge though. Either way, seems like a decent Iron.

Gets the Job Done on Medium-Sized ICs

For the price it works well enough.

Soldering irons which are plugged directly into AC can be annoying since it is difficult to orient them in a way where they are easy to work with and sit in a holder well.

I use this to do emergency repair on a circuit board with many small SMD parts. If any of the multi-pin ICs were to need servicing, I would be unable to solder them accurately with this iron. However this iron is capable of soldering medium-sized IC pins and any size of wire.

I had a Radio Shack soldering iron for years, but it finally gave up the ghost and so I decided to puchase this Hakko unit as a replacement. It works great, heats up quickly, and I like the replaceable tips. My only complaint is after having it on for a while the handle heats up more than my old Radio Shack unit did, but since I'm not holding it for minutes at a time, it's a minor inconvenience. Certainly not too hot to hold, just warmer than my old one.
