Product Description

Reliable digital technology by HAKKO – Introducing the HAKKO FX-888D   Excellent thermal recovery Heater output has been increased by 30% compared to that of the conventional models HAKKO 936·937. Also FX-888D delivers excellent thermal recovery by using T18 series tips for their terrific heat conductivity. This allows soldering at a lower set temperature and reducing the thermal impact on components as well as tip oxidation that can shorten tip life. Thermal recovery graph Rise time to 350°C is 20 seconds faster and tip temperature drop is reduced during continuous work.

This is a great value soldering station and, in my opinion, the best in its class!

After a little over a year of usage, I would rate its soldering performance as "5-Stars." You really can't beat this station's performance anywhere in its price range. The quality of the Hakko FX888D is first-rate, exactly what one would expect from a Japanese product. But, like most products, it has its flaws (see below).

I have used the FX888D for countless soldering tasks associated with DIY HiFi circuit boards and other small electronics tasks. In performing these tasks, I have used "specialized" soldering tips (the T18-D16 chisel tip is standard) with smaller tip mass used to solder circuit boards with small component "pads." One noteworthy point: THE TYPE OF SOLDERING TIP AND ITS MASS WILL AFFECT THE AMOUNT OF HEAT TRANSFERRED. And, the temperature at the tip will NOT necessarily be the temperature indicated on the screen, especially with lower mass tips (lower mass tips will be "colder" than the temperature displayed on the screen). All this is to say that this soldering station DOES NOT have a sensor at the soldering tip/handle assembly. Most, if any, soldering stations in this price range don't have soldering tip/handle temperature sensors. So, the Hakko FX-888D is no exception. Just be aware that what temperature you get at the tip is not necessarily what is shown on the screen when you change out the included trip to another type.

As other reviewer's have noted, the two-button design of the FX-888D is less than noteworthy--"unintuitive" would be how I would describe it. Why Hakko designers have the "calibration temperature adjustment" mode on the "UP" button is a mystery.

This is a duplicate of the review I wrote for the same soldering iron in a different listing. Since the 888D is so new, I thought it would be helpful:

I had purchased the "regular" Hakko FX-888 Soldering Station, which had developed a temperature control problem, so I ended up going with the FX-888D to replace it.

Out of the box, the only difference you're likely to notice between the two is that one's digital and one isn't. The actual iron is the same, the weight is the same, the tip is the same, the base is the same... Side by side, it looks like some corners were cut in FX-888D packaging materials, and the DIN plug on the iron felt just the slightest bit cheaper on the 888D.

In terms of actual use, the FX-888D isn't really as intuitive as the analog. You'd think pushing "up" to get the temperature you want is logical, and the base pretends that it does something if you try. To get it to actually change though, you have to hold down "enter" for two seconds, and then choose your temperature. Not a big deal in the slightest, but just one of those "huh... I wouldn't have designed it that way". Presets are more involved, but not unreasonably so.

Moving the temperature up and down, the iron reacts quickly, just like the trusty FX-888. On the 888D, you can see the base counting up or down as appropriate, and wide (~200 degree) adjustments happen in about 20 seconds or so. One gripe here: the display shows you the setting, rather than the actual temperature -- which is to say: if you set it from 325 to 550, when it counts up to 550 it's ready.

This soldering station seems very well built, and has quite a few nice features. I think it'll last a long time, and it is a MAJOR upgrade over the $20 120V constant-power iron I've been scraping by with for the last couple of years. I don't know why I waited so long to get a quality one.

As many others have mentioned, the two-button digital user interface is not great. This station has quite a few features, but you'll need to read the manual and follow the instructions carefully to access them.

There is one MAJOR problem with this unit. It is VERY easy to throw off its temperature calibration by hundreds of degrees accidentally. Changing the temperature calibration and changing the iron's current temperature are almost exactly the same procedure, and it's not immediately obvious that you're doing one or the other. I did this almost immediately after taking it out of the box, and it was extremely frustrating.

Thankfully, I discovered a YouTube video that explains how to reset it to factory settings (this is not in any manuals or on the Hakko website). Otherwise, I never would have been able to set the correct temperature again, since I don't have temperature measurement/calibration equipment.

After you receive your FX-888D soldering station and read over the less than clear instructions you might find yourself confused by several things. First, how do you access the programmed temperature settings? Second, how do you change the temperature display from Fahrenheit to Celsius? Third, how do you set a password? Well, it turns out that all three are changed by accessing the parameter settings. Only one problem: the printed instructions make no mention of the parameter settings or at least mine didn't. To get to that information read to the end of the printed instructions where you are encouraged to visit Hakko's document website for more instruction. Guess what. Downloading the PDF American instructions provides the missing section on how to change the parameter settings for the FX-888D. Your soldering station is not defective after all but the instructions as provided in the package are, regrettably, incomplete.
