I was going back and forth between Hakko, Weller, and a couple of Chinese made ones. The unit arrived quickly, packed well from B+D Enterprises. The first time I used it it worked great, heated in a minute or so. The second time not so much. I called B+D and told them my issue, they offered to ship me a new unit immediately. I wanted to work through the set up just to be sure it wasn't me (in the end it was) they gave me the reset instructions. I worked through those the next day. It was better but not prefect, so I called Hakko. The customer support rep told me the same reset instructions, and that the oxidation on the tip would cause issues the tip needed to be perfectly clean (same on all manufactures units). They also took my number, then next day the Ops manager for north America called me and gave me his cell number, email, and walked me through getting a good temp reading on the tip. The issue was the oxidation and the fact I was measuring temperature with a thermocouple touching the tip and not in a small pool of solder. (search "solder tip temperature tester" on amazon)
Bottom line the unit works great, I have no worries that I will not get support if there is an issue (apparently there is only one repair guy on the east cost as the units don't go down), and I would do business with B+D anytime.
I have use this unit to de-solderer heavy components from a board, and re-solder connectors on Iphone cables. Heavy to light this station works great.

I was skeptical about this soldering station at first as it does look a bit like a toy to me instead of something more industrial/professional. I was also unfamiliar with the brand name until recently. I checked all the reviews I could find on it online and they all highly recommended it. It heats up very quickly and has enough heat capactity (65 watts) to easily solder 10 gauge wires to terminals. It would be very difficuly if not impossible to do with my old soldering station which only puts out 22 watts. The pen itself is comfortable and doesn't get hot even after the iron is left on for 30 minutes. The tips are fantastic and they have a variety of shapes and sizes available for most any job. I like the digital display that reads out the temperature and makes changing the settings easy. If you are thinking of a new soldering station and are a bit hesitant like I was, take the plunge and get this one. You won't regret it!

I spent a considerable amount of time trying to decide among various soldering stations. I looked at just about every brand in this price range (less than $100) including several that were cheap Chinese knockoffs, I'm really glad I went with the Hakko FX888D. It is substantial -- it is well made, the holder really holds the iron, it comes with both metal and sponge for cleaning the tip, it is accurate, it works great, and it heats up extremely fast. I love that it has a separate on-off switch, and the moment you turn it on, BAM, you see the temp zipping upwards. I chose to the model that came with 6 tips (1 on the unit itself, and 5 additional of various sizes). I'm not sure I will use them all, but I like that I have them. And let me tell you, Hakko tips do not seem cheap! They are also extremely well made. The iron is ready to use as soon as you plug it in, but if you want to program it (I chose to use the 5 preset temperatures) It takes a few extra minutes to follow the instructions in order to do so. (The unit only has 2 buttons on front, not 3, so they must do double duty, and that's why you need to read the instructions) But other than that, it is a fabulous unit!

The setup instructions in the manual detail how to cycle through temperature presets. However, upon following the instructions, the unit did not respond appropriately. As it turns out, the temperature presets are disabled by default and must be enabled as detailed in this YouTube video published by Hakko: [Amazon removed link, search YouTube for H5ymGXuowU8]. To eliminate all suspicion of having purchased a counterfeit product, I checked the following. The primary label on the bottom of the device is the correct width and has the appropriate safety certification markings where counterfeit devices have a smaller label with no certification markings. The stress relief on the cord where it enters the iron is made of silicone rubber -- soft and supple, unlike counterfeit devices which typically use a harder, non-supple rubber. After removing the screws and opening the main unit, I observed the device uses a small auxiliary board for the mains fuse and zenier diode where counterfeit devices incorporate this circuit into the primary circuit board. The test points for factory testing are in accordance with known Hakko standards. The device IC is not the Atmel chip typically seen in counterfeits. There are a lot of helpful guides you can Google to spot counterfeit devices and thankfully, this device is not one of them. This product included the following Hakko tips: T18-D08, T-18-D12, T18-D24, T18-D32, T18-S3.

Pros:
- Non counterfeit, rock solid tool that should last a lifetime
- Sold by B+D Enterprises who has, for 12 months, maintained a 100% positive review rating

Cons:
- Ships in original product box with no tape to seal. I loathe excess packaging but be forewarned, it is blatantly obvious to all what is within this box.
