Product Description

Disguised as a man, Chizuru Yukimura has come to Kyoto searching for her missing father, a doctor who developed a magical elixir that increases the drinker's speed, strength and healing abilities. Instead of her father, however, she stumbles across a battle between the Shinsengumi and the Furies, evil vampire-like creatures of their own making. As things turn out, the Shinsengumi are also searching for her father. And when they discover who she is, they decide to take her into their custody for safe-keeping. But her sex is not the only secret Chizuru has, and as more and more Furies begin appearing in Kyoto and the situation becomes ever deadlier, the Shinsengumi may find that the Furies are the least of their problems in Hakuoki!

Ok, first of all before you buy this anime be aware it is one based off a romance game geared towards a female audience so the game isn't going to just be awesome cool samurai killing people and having super epic battles. Second, a lot of people seem to have the idea that romance and love is all kissing, hugging, and physical contact which is not true. Any who have played the game would understand that like the game, the anime is not meant to be all over sexualized and physical. It centers around the main character living with the Shinsengumi and the relationships that get built with them over time based on the circumstances of her staying with them and her actions. In other words the romance is built slowly and not jumped in to which is how real romance should happen, plus it was meant to mostly follow the steps that would have been taken in the game to lead Chizuru into a romance with Hijikata.

True that Chizuru does not really protect herself in the anime, though there are instances where she tried to but members of the shinsengumi would step in before she could do anything. I don't think there is anything completely wrong with that based on the idea of a man trying to be chivalrous and protect a woman which I don't see a lot of honestly. Also I believe based on her character that she might not have been afraid to defend herself but I don't think she wanted to kill anyone. I really like the historical bits of the anime, the fact it's kind of shows loyalty, love, and affection between friends and fellow samurai and it's not all sexual like most of the garbage I see on tv. A lot of the anime does center around the strong bonds of friendship which I love, bonds that close are rare so it gives me a sense of respect for the characters and the anime. I think the game/anime wasn't meant to just be all romance and love and that the romances were meant to try to develop between characters in a more realistic way instead of them just throwing themselves at each other.

My opinion though, use the internet and sites like youtube to research and watch clips from the anime first before you buy it.If you can get more knowledge from researching it you can make a better decision on if you should buy or not.

A lot of the reviews are misleading . It's not a bad anime but it's not at all like the love story you might be expecting. I bought this series but ended up watching the rest of the series and the movies through another source . First off , if your interested in the movies as well then you should know that they are practically the exact copies of the series with a few small subtle changes to the storyline if that. Your pretty much watching the same thing over again. God! I'm so glad I didn't buy them. To me it would of been a waste of my money and really p'd me off. Especially because the prices are extremely high for some of these movies its ridiculous. You mine as well choose to do either the series or the movies and stick to just that because they really arent much different from each other. not even the animation is any different . Not just that but if you were expecting a cute romance or that harem love story. Well then your probably going to be very disappointed. There isnt very much if any romance at all except for maybe the very last episode. If you want a samurai anime then by all means it's not a bad one but if you were looking for a good romance story I'd have to say pass because its just not there.

I like this series because of the way it's different from other anime. It's historical. It relies more on characterization than conventional contrived anime drama. The characters are flawed in ways that make them seem more human. They make mistakes, and pay for them --sometimes with their lives. There's political intrigue, romance adventure and most importantly --sword fights!

I went looking for an anime that was a little more adult oriented. My daughter's getting older now and so the cutesy animes she used to watch are giving way to more adult stories. (Thank goodness. No more Pretty Cure!). I wanted to find something that required a bit more intellect to watch and this is one of them.

As I understand it, this anime is based off a game for girls --sort of like a reverse harem. You can see it right away because most of the characters seem bound to Chisuru in one way or another. The discussion has already started on who we each would like to see her end up with. I like the young girl who is the center of the story. She's not an invincible warrior, nor is she a lovable clueless clutz. When the story begins you can see the hints of her character and inner strength even though it's not always apparent on the outside. I like the fact that in the midst of all the conflict, she's struggling to find her own way among the Shinsengumi.

I had to look some things up in order for the story to become clearer. It may help those of you watching it. The Shinsengumi were sort of like a cross between the police and special forces. Unlike other Samurai they did not serve feudal lords --but rather were tasked with protecting the city so they can also be referred to as Ronin.

The Bakafu is basically the Shogun, or you could think of it as the office of the Shogun, or central command. The Shogun is not to be confused with the Emperor. The Emperor held very little actual power back in those days.

One other thing you may find interesting is that almost all of the male characters are based on actual people from the period. So you can look them up on wikipedia if you want to see for yourself.

I'm almost to the end of the firs season and I have to say it's quickly becoming one of my favorites.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great anime but with a very annoying main character

Hakuoki: Season 1 (also known as Hakuouki from some sources) hit the spot I was looking for. I was looking for an anime with a traditional aspect but also with some coolness to it. Hakuoki has lots of sword fighting and samurai action and also has a pretty good story line. The story is about the Shinsengumi and their "history" but with the flair of vampires (devils) thrown into the mix. It makes for a fun anime overall. The only complaint I had was about the english dub. The main girls voice is very annoying. The main character also is a helpless, overly annoying, cry cry girl. I mean, there are lots of animes where the female has to be protected, but come on... This is over the top. Stand up for yourself a little bit and quit squealing all the time....

Other than that, very good anime. I would recommend it to someone looking for history/samurai/action/supernatural anime. It does take a bit for the supernatural bit to take full on though.
