About the Author

Avis D. Schorer is a retired nurse who has lived in Bloomington, Minnesota, for the past 32 years. A native of Iowa, she took her nurse’s training at Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. After serving in the army from March 1942 until January 1946, she attended Anesthesia School at Northwestern Hospital (then Wesley Memorial) in Chicago. Since retirement, she has traveled extensively and does volunteer work at the library and at Fairview Ridges Hospital. She is a member of the Augsburg Park Library Writers’ Group.

Travel log/gossip column – not a combat memoir

I looked forward to this as the experiences of combat nurses are very under reported. Her descriptions of Anzio were worthwhile. The rest of the book were: we went here and when we got leave we visited this town and then went shopping (usually at the PX). We then moved there and when we had leave we went to this place and went shopping. We also went to this Officers’ Club and had dinner and went dancing. She did a lot of dating and dancing. She also talks about who was dating whom and who had a drinking problem and… She occasionally mentions that she took care of some wounded guys. It isn’t until the end that she mentions the magnitude of the patient load.
If you're are looking for a memoir of a combat nurse, keep looking.

One nurses modest yet intense account of her experience trying to save lives in the hellish cauldron of WW2. Just a regular extraordinary gal from a little town in Iowa. I gave this book to my mother on her 91st birthday. She is the same age and grew up just 75 miles from the author. Although not a nurse my mother's experiences during this time are remarkably similar. Their first encountsr with Jim Crow America outside Iowa is just one example. The author's revelation came in Arkansas, my Mother saw it for the first time in Houston Texas, 1942.
She basically read the book non-stop, cover to cover in record time. I also read it and agree with her.

I liked this based on the writing style and the honesty of the writer giving personal impressions and experiences. It doesn't give a really glowing impression of the brave front line nurses in a lot of the book though. they seemed more preoccupied with buying souvenirs and finding men than anything else... except when dealing with the actual wounded soldiers, where they all excelled.
It is an entertaining read for historical accuracy and a move-by-move of what the nurses did and where they were stationed and how hard the war was on nurses that many didn't feel should be there. The nurses of WWII were essential to the survival of so many soldiers and none more so than the frontline nurses at the first evac hospitals.

This book was very interesting . I couldn't believe how her travels/ battle locations mirrored my fathers. I learned things about the war that my dad never shared with us kids. My dad was a barrage balloon operator and she makes reference to those numerous times in her book. I'm giving a copy to my mom . I think she will love it as much as I did. Very educational and informational.

Inspiring

This book was a definite eye-opener. I read it at age 17, and was aghast at the horrors of Anzio and inspired by the nurses who served there. This book gave me a glimpse of the true nature of nursing, and largely because of this book, I entered nursing school a year later. I'm now a Registered Nurse, and this book has an honored spot on my bookshelves. A definite must-read.

Good story but an abrupt ending.

I probably would have given this 5 stars except I didn't like the ending. She goes into a lot of how she got into the military but stops abruptly when she gets home. I wondered where the rest of the story was. As a nurse though; I enjoyed reading about her experiences.
