I am not comfortable with most short stories, basically because they are short! I bought this Kindle book based on positive reviews and recommendations. I can see why these short stories were liked by others. The writing is superb. The characters are as real as characters on paper can get, living lives that are simple on the surface. Yet that homey down to earth appearance masks layers of complexity. That is where I always start to have trouble with short stories. I have just begun to engage with the characters, and bingo--story over. It's like having to settle for still photos instead of viewing a feature film. Give me a big fat book any day over short stories, even ones as good as these. I rated this collection 4 stars because of its positive aspects. I could not honesty make that a 5 star rating, when I was left wanting much more from each tale.

This is the first book I've read by Percival Everett, and I am so impressed with his writing that I've already ordered two more. I expect to read all or most of his work. Although I do not usually enjoy short stories, this author accomplishes more in a short story than many others do in a novel. His writing is clear and evocative. His characters are interesting and develop during the story. His story-lines are thought provoking, touching, and original. His writing is also sprinkled with wonderful humor, sometimes in what the characters say or think, sometimes in the development of the plot,

Full disclosure; I am truly a fan of Percival Everett's writing, so I tend to be a bit biased when it comes to his work. Although I enjoyed this collection of stories, I can't say there was anything special about this book. His prose was ordinary and the stories, while showcasing a holistic approach to life didn't generate enough vibrancy to make the assemblage sizzle. I found each one pleasurable enough, but not adequately memorable. The stories leave you with things to ponder, but some definitely have that unfinished feel. I still would recommend this book to those who like short stories and good writing.

Fortunately for the reader, they will find no rest in these conflict-driven situations, but they do again and again reveal beautiful moments of humanity. This collection is like a master class in how to write short stories. So good.
