This book is the second in the series Halfway Witchy. The first book Halfway Dead
Loving this series! The author has a clever way of pulling you into these characters lives. Can’t wait to see what happens in book 3! There is a book 3 right?
"Wonderful, fabulous, terrific! Thank you for this series, Sir. Carlie rocks, Wulfric is awesome, Gus rules and I wish I had a Gran in my life (the magic would not be turned down either...just saying). Great world build, characters with body, and a plot to roll around in. This is why I read, and why I love finding a new author. More Waffles, Please!!"
I will also add that, in my humble opinion, Alice needed a thump on the nose. lol
I am off to start his Fearless series.. This should be fun!
This is the second book in the series, and it's better than the first. Carlie's character rounds out more in this book. She shows that she's not perfect: in an incident with a customer, she justifies her actions to herself in a manner that hopefully indicates she's going to have a bit more of a struggle to stay on the "good" side of magic later in the series. Her Gran is still very much the elder sage, full of power and knowledge, and she shares more of her magical secrets with Carlie. Against very old powers, however, even Gran has limits. Fortunately, Carlie has more than just Gran to help. Her half-Viking, half-vampire lover turns up just when she needs him most, and a librarian, shapeshifters, and ghosts all help her figure out just what's going on with the circus, its uncanny ringmaster, and unusual clowns.
The magic/supernatural system in Halfway is consistent, and I was happy to see that the magic had limits and costs. The first-person narrative works really well; Carlie's a little snarky, a little hedonistic, and a lot of fun. A nice bit of reading entertainment.
I'm going to go have some waffles now.
Review based on an advance reader copy.
Synopsis (from the author): The circus came to Halfway, and they brought the weird.
When clowns, vampires, and corpses start piling up in town, Carlie has to break away from her boyfriend, Wulfric, to bring her witchy skills to the table- or grill, as the case may be.
When the body of a young woman washes up in the lake, it unleashes a spiral of mystery that will bring Carlie, Gran, and Wulfric into a storm of magical warfare. Spells will fly. Curses will rain. Amidst it all, Carlie will make waffles, protect her town, and find out if a man from the distant past can join her in happy ever after.
With love and honor at stake, Carlie has no peer.
What I liked: Carlie and Gran are wonderful familiar characters that I just enjoy. The first person narrative is done well, with just the right mix of snarky commentary and conversational storytelling. The premise of the book is the appearance of creepy clowns, vampires, and the circus come to town. The battles that Carlie and Gran fight, the passage of power and knowledge from Gran to Carlie, and the interaction with the ghosts make this an excellent read!
What I didn’t like: I thought the book could have used more Wulfric. He plays such an important role in the book, but I didn’t get enough backstory on the character. Other than that, not much to complain about!!
Overall impression: Halfway Bitten by Terry Maggert was a great entertaining read! Filled with witchy magic, cool characters (even the French Canadian ghost), sacrifice, and a satisfying conclusion, I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a bit of witchy fantasy!
My rating: 5 Stars!!
Carlie is forced to take the law into her own hands to protect her family lands and the great citizens of Halfway from evil vampiric clowns. Clowns, in this context, is not a label, it’s an occupation. Can you imagine clowns that are vampires? Scares me, for sure.
You might say “pfft, Carlie can handle it…” but there was a few times that I really thought she got over her head. That made it exciting and also developed Carlie more for me. She is young – very young. She should know that she doesn’t know everything, but I’m sure that’s how I was at that age. Gran is center stage with Carlie this episode and they have to put a stop to murders in Halfway. It’s a mystery of WHO that is somewhat easy to figure out, but WHY is the reason the pages keep getting turned. The characters that are brought in to help point Carlie and her Gran in the right direction didn’t need much introduction. They were quick characters that added depth to the story. Anna introduced her brother Alex, who in my opinion is MUCH nicer. Carlie enlists help from the friendly neighborhood librarian who is one of the few residents of Halfway that are clued in to the world around them. Wulfric makes an attractive appearance, of course, but it’s the ending that really gets the ball rolling for the next book. It’s not EXACTLY a cliffhanger as the book arc is finished, but the series arc is just getting it’s groove on.
