"The Hali'imaile General Store is a vestige of the pineapple plantations era recast as an airy, peach-colored restaurant that serves a smashing version of Hawaiian cuisine....At some point during the meal I experienced a stunning, if subliterate and hardly original epiphany: Maui good."
--David Herndon, Travel & Leisure
"[Beverly Gannon] offers insight into why she created certain dishes or where she learned to make them."

Many recipes have long lists of ingredients you'll need, although the instructions themselves aren't hard to follow and in some cases you can just substitute something store-bought and ignore that part. I do wish there were more pictures of the actual food... flowers don't tell me anything about how to make a puff pastry tulip. I also wish more of the Hawaiian names for different kinds of fish were translated... swordfish was, why not "oko"?
And if you're looking for a particular crab dip recipe... the author trolls you good, it ain't in here.
The plates really are quite unique, without being challenging at all to the taste buds. Just delicious!
I cannot recommend this cook book enough. My title says it all. Best cookbook I've ever had!
(I did buy my first copy right at the restaurant in Maui. But have bought copies since as gifts and her subsequent cookbook all through Amazon. If you get to Maui go to the restaurant. It will be one of your best meals on the island, if not in your life.)
It's a great place in what the locals on Maui call "Up Country". Now you can share in the joy
these recipes bring. The Book is a great size. It fits nicely on a cookbook stand and is easy to read.
I hate to go into details that others here have already illuminated, but if you are looking for great
collection of Hawaiian inspired dishes or like our family; you are a fan of Bev and her lil' store, then look no further!
BTW - Food Network now has the recipe for Macadamia Nut Pie posted for all to enjoy!
