Hallowed Ground is a breathtakingly emotional and poignant read that illustrates the profound effect of the casualties of war – on both sides – those who live it and those who experience it through their loved ones who are injured or killed. What makes this book as well as the series as a whole so soul bearing is the fact that Rebecca Yarros, her husband, and her family live the solider’s life, so the transparency that exists in the words…in the mental anguish…in the depiction of what Josh and Ember experience throughout the course of their story has an even bigger effect on the reader as I’m sure it did on Yarros as she wrote it.

It’s hard to put into words the emotions that Hallowed Ground pulled from me as I read it, especially with how it began. Because readers are given both Josh and Ember’s perspectives as they struggle with their lives during Josh’s deployment, it forces us to understand both sides regardless of how our personal feelings are swayed by witnessing their individual suffering and anguish. Intellectually, duty and honor are traits that we want all soldiers to have, but emotionally, the risks, the what ifs, and the broken promises prevent reason from dominating, lending way to emotional reactions that could force Josh and Ember to lose more than they ever thought possible.

It was supposed to be Josh and Ember against the world because after fighting to stay together despite having a long distance relationship for the past two years, it was finally their chance to be in the same location, starting their life side by side. But when duty calls, Josh must answer and despite Ember’s fears, she can’t force him to stay home because then he wouldn’t be the man she fell in love with even though she doesn’t want to lose another man she loves.

I have been waiting with bated breath for Hallowed Ground, and when I was so darn lucky to read this early, I'm pretty sure the entire state heard my squeal of excitement. I absolutely LOVED every single bit of this book. I inhaled the first three books in the Flight & Glory series, which is ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY to get the full effect of every single feeling in this incredible conclusion. Hallowed Ground was no different. Rebecca Yarros puts you through the emotional torture chamber in this incredibly suspenseful, heart-wrenching conclusion to Josh and Ember's story, and wraps this series up in a perfect little bow that you set neatly beside you so you can have it close by to read it again. This is one of those stories that is a perfect example of the meme that says "This book destroyed me, I couldn't eat for a week, YOU HAVE TO READ THIS BOOK." I had to will myself to hold back from turning the pages too fast, eager to find out what happens next, but desperate to savor every word like a piece of your favorite treat. I could feel every ounce of her soul she had poured into the pages of this story.

There were moments I couldn't breathe, where I felt the very air being sucked out of my lungs. I experienced every single emotion from the first page to the very last word - I seriously went through the emotional wringer. But for the love of it all, I would do it all again. If I could read this series over and over again, for the first time every time, I would. There are very few series where the characters permanently embed themselves in my soul, but Josh, Ember, Jagger, Paisley, Grayson, Sam, and Will (who turned out to be one of my favorites in the series) have done just that. They are the characters where I will sit and daydream about what they're doing now.

*I was given an ARC in exchange for my honest review*

I was so hesitant to read this book. Never being one to like to say goodbye to a series, especially when it comes to my favorite characters, I almost didn't want to read it. I would open it, read a chapter and then tell myself not to read the next. I just wanted things to never change -to have my Flyboys with me always -but curiosity eventually won out and I finally worked up the courage to take the plunge and read the rest of Hallowed Ground. I'm glad I did.

I absolutely...ABSOLUTELY...loved this book from start to finish. I laughed. I cried. I wanted to smack Josh and Ember upside the head sometimes at their behaviors. Ultimately there was a connection between myself and the characters that made them so incredibly realistic to me. This just goes to show that Rebecca Yarros has created characters so three-dimensional and full of heart and soul that they don't feel limited to just inked words on pages. These characters have been such a part of my heart since I first was introduced to them in Full Measures and I'm glad I got to read the end of their story as well as what happened to the others. This story not only focuses on the flaws of our characters but their strengths as they battle their demons for the sake of love and each other. Though it breaks my heart having to let them go, I know their stories are done. When I finished the last page of the chapter, not only did I cry because of the ending but because of the beauty of their beginnings; the ones we'll never be privy to. So thank you, Rebecca Yarros. For gracing us with these wonderful characters. For showing us a love worth fighting for. And for putting a little bit of Josh and Ember in our hearts always. Thank you.
