first things first: jamie lee curtis is XXXXing awesome, beautiful in her own skin, strong, powerful, aware. jamie lee curtis is the living embodiment of edward o. wilson's musings on survival: "we are not afraid of predators, we're transfixed by them, prone to weave stories and fables and chatter endlessly about them, because fascination creates preparedness, and preparedness, survival. In a deeply tribal way, we love our monsters." jamie's laurie knows this, and she is VERY prepared. she has sought to ready her daughter and granddaughter, but, of course, they've dismissed her as a lunatic, unable to get out from under the trauma she suffered 40 years earlier. it is this emphasis on relationships, between laurie and her daughter and granddaughter, that really make this movie shine. the granddaughter seems to have softer feelings for her survivalist gramma, underscoring how often the baggage that is bestowed upon children by their parents skips a generation, allowing less encumbered relationships between grandparents and grandchildren. that this is a point of emphasis is alone astonishingly wonderful, and gives this incarnation of halloween a deeper, more meaningful pull. a movie that is, in essence, about the reconciliation of three generations of women, is a radical thing indeed. judy greer, who is often painfully relegated to dull, reactive roles not befitting an actor of such power and quirk, is fantastic, appearing to fall into old patterns before delivering one of this film's finest moments. andi matichak is stuck in the middle as allyson, who loves her grandmother, but who also thinks she's overreacting, and needs to move on. the warmth she brings to her interactions with curtis is affecting and authentic, and filled with nuance. this is the strength of this movie.
the music is, of course, awesome, and the iconic theme is used to perfect affect throughout. green's camera is broad and encompassing, and often recalls carpenter and cundey's, with wide-establishing shots that allow the movement to walk right into the middle of the shot. the shape, michael myers, is done really well. he moves with unrestrained purpose, and uses head tilts to perfection. it was great to see nick castle as michael unmasked, further fullfilling the dream of an original reunion. speaking of the mask, the mask is beautiful, one of the very best in the entire series, whichever michael-verse you happen to be in. and michael is satisfyingly brutal. he's like a force of nature. he IS nature. i certainly have a few nitpicks here and there (the pod casting crew,a.k.a. michael's deus ex mask-ina; the the doctor who took over after loomis died), but nothing major. i will say, as a fan of pretty much all the movies (the only ones i really dislike are part 5 and resurrection, and i loved zombie's movies) i liked how contained this one was, and that it established a new timeline. we may as well have a bunch of different realities and outcomes twining around the pumpkin patch, eh?
i do feel compelled to add, as a rob zombie supporter, that the violence here was a little less affecting to me than in rob's films. as much grief as he gets for shaking his camera all around, he does it so the viewer can feel the aggression of the act, as though the violence is happening to us. i find this harrowing and disturbing, which i think is important when presenting violence--it should make you uncomfortable. in this halloween, the violence, while generally unpleasant, never left me winded. this halloween, like carpenter's, is fairly clean, especially in a camera sense.
i applaud the folks who lovingly brought this franchise back to us, by doing something that was both different, and yet a continuance of something we're all very fond of. keep your eyes peeled, because easter eggs, er, halloween pumpkins abound, and if you blink, you'll miss 'em. and above all else, this halloween proves, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that women, regardless of age, are beautiful, powerful, and in charge of their own destinies. jamie lee, you are an inspiration. and an a$$-kicker.
I really believed that this take on Halloween was supposed to return to the atmosphere and attitude of John Carpenters masterpiece and I looked forward to it more that any movie in years..I thought Michael Myers would once again become "the shape" lurking in the shadows causing fear, dread, and gut wrenching suspense with the help of a evil sounding minimalist score (even John Carpenter disappointed me here). And why not pay homage to Dean Cundey's fantastic cinematography? This looked like some made for Netflix poorly lit fake film..I'm glad they dropped the Laurie is Michael's sister thing that started in Halloween 2 (A far superior film) but that is about all that I liked...If this is supposed to be a direct sequel to the original why make Laurie a psycho vigilante hell bent on revenge?..I have no problem with the Laurie character making a appearance in the film, but to have some ridiculous final show down with a plot to cage "The Shape" is about as far away from the mindset of groundbreaking 70's independent film making as you can get...And don't get me started on the sitcom style humor.
I swear I almost started to tear up in the theater due to my disappointment. This is no better than Halloween 4,5,6, H20, but anything is better than Resurrection...Halloween, Halloween 2, Halloween 3: The Season of The Witch, Rob Zombies Halloween, and yes even Rob Zombies Halloween 2 are all that exist to me. I have not been this wrecked with disappointment since "The Phantom Menace"
I wanted to like this movie more than anyone I know, but the fact is, it's just ok. There are certainly some great moments, JLC is amazing, James Jude Courtney (Michael Myers) does the best job since Nick Castle, and Carpenter's score along with his son and godson are a fantastic addition...BUT...the movie fails to live up to what it could have been. There was so much potential in this film. My biggest problems are (in no particular order), the pacing...too fast, the humor...too much, the lack of JLC...we needed more of her...and the god awful twist...totally killed (no pun intended) the movie. No one, and I mean NO ONE should EVER put on Michael Myer's mask except Michael. This movie could have been really special, but it fails to live up to its full potential and miserably fails to live up to the hype. It's good, but not great.
