OFFICER FRANK HAWKINSLaurie’s fellow emergency-room victim from Halloween Kills, Officer Hawkins has long lived with the guilt of not finishing off Michael Myers as a young beat cop in 1978. He knows that he alone could have put an end to the reign of terror that The Shape began all those years ago. |
LINDSEY WALLACENo one alive in Haddonfield, outside Laurie Strode’s family, knows how much Laurie has suffered as Lindsey Wallace does. In 1978, Laurie was babysitting Lindsey, and she and her childhood pal, Tommy Doyle, had to race down the street to escape Michael Myers’ blade. Suffering the PTSD of survivor’s guilt, Lindsey has managed to rebuild her life and, in Halloween Ends, has become a beacon of hope for Laurie. Laurie’s champion and best friend, Lindsey encourages Laurie to “choose life” and try to let go of the past. |
MICHAEL MEYERS (AKA THE SHAPE)After being set upon by the town of Haddonfield and left for dead, Michael Myers channeled their rage and used it to transcend death itself, taking the life of Laurie Strode’s daughter, Karen, as added revenge. He hasn’t been seen for four years… is he dead, in hiding, or is something else going on? |

Ends isn't about Michael Myers continuously killing people, with the Shape instead being used as a symbol for the infection of anger and fear that he has spread over Haddonfield.
The final confrontation between Laurie and the Shape is still the focus of the film, but the movie gets there in a less conventional way than you'd typically see in a slasher, with a heavy emphasis placed on the characters and how Michael's actions and legacy have impacted their lives. Make no mistakes though. The Shape is still the main villain, and though his screen time is sparce, each scene he's in is powerful and frightening.
I can understand why some fans of Michael Myers may feel their favorite movie monster was slighted, but for those looking for a Halloween movie that balances the story of Laurie and the Shape while also managing to do something a little different, this is a must see. Green's take on Laurie and the Shape is ambitious and unusual, and I absolutely loved it.
Truth is, Ends is entertaining in its own way, but it's simply not the movie fans were led to believe it was going to be. And being different isn't always a good thing.
The problem with Ends is it just doesn't make any sense. So, in Halloween (the original) Laurie is attacked by Michael Myers and apparently this traumatized her for 40 years to the point where she is completely obsessed over him in Halloween 2018. Then in Kills, Michael racks up a huge body count including Laurie's very own daughter, and only 4 years pass, and in Ends, Laurie has moved on and is living a normal life?? That makes no sense whatsoever. It's almost as if the story is backwards: after the original and after 40 years Laurie should be over it. But then she after Kills she should be completely paranoid and obsessed because only 4 years have passed, and her own daughter fell victim in the events.
And then in Kills, we see probably the strongest and most resilient version of Michael Myers that we've ever seen. And we're led to believe this Michael would be heading into Ends. Instead, what we end up with is a broken version of Michael who is incredibly weak. It's actually pretty odd to go from the strongest version of the character in one movie to the weakest version of the character in the very next movie.
Then to top it all off, from the way Kills concluded, one would naturally expect that Ends would be focused on the confrontation between Michael and Laurie. In fact, even the promotional posters of the movie tend to suggest this. Only, Michael is hardly in the movie at all, and their confrontation is extremely lackluster. So even with all the planning and prep work she did in 2018 she couldn't put down Michael Myers. In Kills, even with an armed mob, they couldn't put down Michael. But then in Ends he just gimps his way into her kitchen, they fight, and she gets the best of him. And that's it. There wasn't even at least an elaborate trap or anything set up for him.
Then about the new character Cory Cunningham. He wouldn't have been bad, but how are we supposed to be so invested in a character just thrown at us like this? If the writers wanted to make the final film focus so much on a character other than Michael Myers, then they should have introduced him back in 2018 and flesh out his character over 2018, Kills, and conclude in Ends. But it's ridiculous to just throw a brand-new character at us in the final film and expect us to actually care.
This Halloween movie is just plagued by non-sensical writing, falsely leading the audience into thinking it would focus on Michael vs Laurie, and quite honestly, a disrespectful end to Michael Myers. He should have gone out with as a near unstoppable force, not as a crippled old man in a mask.
