Taking place in October, a Halloween theme is perfect for a mystery involving a skeleton and a reportedly haunted house. Someone new is moving into the Harrington House. Rumor has it that the family that built the house was cursed. It seems Mr. Harrington buit the magnificent house just so he could abandon his family there.
That abandonment theme hits home with Tess, who recently discovered her father may not have died as and when she believed. Her search, with assistance from computer research maestro Tony, is an ongoing theme within the series. We also get to deal with animals looking for a longterm, stable and loving home and people who can be patient and kind, and deal with issues that come up in their lives together. Lots of parallells within the story and subthemes.
While many cozies are built on unusual murders, it is the characters that make this series. We become part of their family and close inner circle. We learn a little bit more about them in each book. In this series we are also investigating human behavior and motives.
Overall this book has a sad feeling, but also, just like the season in which it is set, there is a feeling of change. It promises that if we stay for the journey, secrets will be revealed.
The main character, Tess, is a mail carrier and her constant companion is her dog, Tilly. In this edition, a old mansion ( said to be haunted) is now being reopened by the most recent heir. He plans to renovate and live in the house which has been empty for close to 50 years. In the house, it was said that all 5 children who lived there died and were buried in the house's cemetery. However, when the heir finds a skeleton in a closet of the house, the mystery of what happened there so long ago deepens. The heroine, Tess, and her friends are on the hunt to find the answers.
Kathi Daley is a great author who knows how to draw readers in and keep them interested in all of her books. She adds twists and turns while developing realistic characters and communities. I am always anxious for the release of her next book.
An old abandon house that is said to be haunted suddenly gets a new owner. As the new owner is making plans to renovate the house, he finds skeletons that were of the previous inhabitants.
This leads to Tess and Tony digging into the past lives and the children who lived there and how some staged their own deaths. What really happened to them?
In the meantime Tess learns more about her mysterious father and her mom earlier first love who resembles him. Is there a connection or is it just a coincidence?
Once again we are caught up again in the story line.
When a neighborhood "haunted house" finally becomes inhabited by someone other than the tragic ghosts rumored to reside there, it is only the beginning of the mystery and danger that Tess and her friend Tony find themselves involved in.
Can they sort out all the skeletons in the family closet, both figurative and literal, or will an old family curse cause the new resident to become just another ghost, doomed to forever haunt the Halloween House?
I can't wait for more in this fun series!
This is the fourth in the Tess and Tillie series. This series follows mail carrier Tess and her dog Tillie as they solve mysteries around their small town of White Eagle, Montana.
Like all of Kathi's stories these have a lot of heart and include a host of interesting characters and bit of small town charm.
Kathi is a talented story teller and you find that her stories besides being clean entertaining reads also tend to play to our sense of fair play and justice.
If you enjoy Cozy Mysteries you pretty much cannot go wrong with these.
