Zak and Wendy are a couple of horror buffs who love Halloween.
In their sleepy, run-down little town, an exciting attraction promises to inject some life into the place for one special night only. A travelling carnival, making its debut on Halloween.
Anticipation builds, and the mysterious 'Halloween Land' carnival is the talk of the town; the calliope music, bright lights, and sweet and savoury smells from the pop-up carnival lure in the crowds flocking to the pier. The two teenage friends Zak and Wendy are eager to be among the first.
Revelations unfold, mysteries peek from the outer limits. The kids have to think and act fast to defeat the evil that's come to town and it’s nothing like in the movies!
This tale is full of mystery, fun, magic, tension and dread.
Step up for the ride, give your ticket to the clown, she'll show you a good time; no one can say where you will end up, but it'll be a wicked ride!
PRAISE FOR HALLOWEEN LAND
"A fun, spook-filled throwback that evokes Laymon and R. L. Stein in equal measure... imbued with a real sense of adventure."
— Kyle M. Scott, author of The Club and Dark Island
Kennedy has given us a great tale, reminiscent of Bradbury. Halloween Land was truly a joy to read.
— Andrew Lennon, author of A Life to Waste
“Kevin J. Kennedy’s Halloween Land peeled back the years of adulthood and revived the youthful lover of All Hallows’ Eve inside me. This fun and frightening tale of a Halloween carnival with sinister intentions captivated and entertained me from beginning to end. Buy your ticket now... but beware of the Funhouse!”
— Ronald Kelly, author of Fear, Undertaker’s Moon, and Irish Gothic
"A genuinely creepy, nostalgic romp from light into deepest darkness."
— Christopher Motz, author of Pine Lakes and A Hostile Takeover
"Kennedy's 'Halloween Land' comes at you a million miles an hour. Filled with as much emotional depth as carnage. This one will have you hooked from page one!"
— Steve Stred, author of Ritual
If the thought of crazed clowns and killer carnivals have you trembling from both fear and anticipation, then Kevin Kennedy’s Halloweenland is the nightmarish novella that you need.
— J.C. Michael, author of Pandemonium and You Only Get One Shot
"Old school horror clashes with new in this surgically-lean coming of age tale. Lean, hip,
and well-seasoned with blood and carnage, just the thing to get you in the Halloween spirit."
— Tim Curran, author of Clownflesh and Bioterror
"Part Bradbury, part Laymon, Halloween Land is something straight off the paperback horror rack! Classic horror fans need to check this out."
— Glenn Rolfe, author of August's Eyes and Until Summer Comes Around
"Halloween Land may be dripping festive themes, but you do not need to wait for Fall to get your ticket to the dark carnival. The wonderful blend of Halloween, carnival, and coming-of-age tropes blend perfectly into a fun and enthralling novella. Halloween Land is horror comfort food to be consumed in one sitting, perhaps by a fire with a stiff drink and some leftover candy. The story starts in a Halloween carnival to tickle your inner child before powering into adult badassery. The adventure is full of the barrage of monsters and battles you come to expect from Kevin J. Kennedy. Get in line to see if you survive the Fun House!"
— Christine Bergling, author of Savages and The Rest Will Come

Zak and Wendy are so excited to go to an attraction coming to their town called Halloween Land. They have chosen the perfect costumes, and both are crushing hard on one another. Neither knows that the other has the same feelings, and both have the hopes that the fair will bring them closer.
However, Halloween Land isn’t an ordinary carnival passing through town. It has it’s dark secrets, and it is hungry. Zak and Wendy must try and escape it’s hold, and make it to dawn. Five years later, the pair have split in separate directions and lifestyles, but Halloween Land is coming back to their town! They are the only Hope of putting an end to the madness! Will they succeed? Will they bond even more? Or will they become fodder for the mystical attraction?
I really enjoyed this novella, and it has a wonderful mixture of young adult and horror fiction. Kevin blends both by starting with a more YA feel, and then seamlessly flowing into a more adult realm. I felt this was a fabulous debut solo novella, and a major step out of a comfort zone! I really would love to see Kennedy continue to explore solo projects.
Overall, I have to give Halloween Land by Kevin J. Kennedy four pumpkin heads out of five skulls. I only felt a slight reduction was necessary, and for two small reasons only. I would have liked to see a bit more of what occurred in the five year gap, and I would have liked to get to know a little more about Clown at the end. All in all, I really felt this was a fun read, and perfect to get you into the Halloween spirit. I felt a lot of nostalgia, and I really enjoyed that. I even thought of some things that probably aren’t even what Kevin was going for. Such as, Ickybod Crane from the Super Nintendo game Clayfighter, or the skeletons from one of my favorites Jason and the Argonauts (Ray Harryhausen version), Channel Zero No End House, Big, and even a dash of a Zombieland feel. Until next time, my friends.
The pair sets out, costumes on, money in hand and nothing but the night to enjoy! The carnival is exceptional, beyond their wildest dreams, appearing like magic out of the night. The old pier has been transformed to a fall landscape of music, food booths and games. Hundreds of people are there, out for a good time. The decorations are excellent, creepy, cheesy, corny and perhaps a little bit too on point. The carnie freaks are amazing, no expense spared at some incredibly creepy costumes. The clown is especially striking, beautifully made up and incredibly sad as she welcomes them to the funhouse.
The funhouse is everything a funhouse is meant to be, but perhaps cornier and a bit more childish than the pair of 13 year-olds had hoped for, maybe they are getting too old, but it was still fun. When they exit, the pier is weirdly silent, and the hundreds of people are missing. The clown greets them in her sad way and tries to help them understand that the funhouse is not as innocent as it seems. It decides who lives and dies or rather who stays and who goes. She tells them they will not be safe until they make it off the pier completely. All hell breaks loose as the kids try to make their way back to safety.
I don’t want to say anymore for spoiler reasons, so I’ll just say this, if you enjoyed Halloween at all as a child, you’ll love this book. It’s a lot of fun, a nice quick read, creepy creatures abound, and the storyline becomes more complex as the story goes on. Nice 4 stars for this entertaining novella.
This started out really good. The way the carnival was described, I could feel the nostalgia, smell the carnival scents, hear the carnival music, the sound of the rides, and all the excitement.
This is no ordinary carnival. Its a dark supernatural carnival. One that
can appear in different time periods. It is not friendly and it takes whomever it wishes.
There is a good story here, but I felt that there were a lot of missing pieces. It needed more character development, more details about the carnival carny employees. Where did they come from and why are they so evil? Why are the fortune teller and the clown helping Zak and Wendy?
I felt that if this was developed into a novel instead of a novella, it would make a really good story.
I also feel that this could definitely be a child's worst nightmare. Suitable for a young reader that loves a fun horror story and loves Halloween.
2.5 Stars/Rounded to 3
You will have to read it to find out and see what different creatures they would have to battle. And find who is the only carnival carnie who can help them.

Coming of age and carnival horror are two of my favourites, so this was a must!
Can't wait for more from the author!
It has a similar feel to IT by Stephen King, and Black Mouth by Ronald Malfi, but shorter, and less scary.
so if you have looking for something like those but lighter and less intense, than this would be ideal.
