This a great book if you want to learn more about the Characters, Species, Locations, Technology, Vehicles, and Weapons of HALO. They have great pictures, detailed information panels, and interesting details about the HALO Universe.

Characters:
The book has all the major characters from HALO: Combat Evolved to HALO: Reach. There are facts for both Human Characters and Covenant.

Species:
As we all know the Covenant are made up of several different Species. This book goes through the different species but also the different classes inside the Covenant Order. For example; there is a page on the Elites, the Arbiter, and the Honor Guard. All are Shangheili but each have different roles and stations.

Locations:
One of my favorite features of the book is their explanation of the major maps in the HALO games. Not only the campaign levels,but also some of the multi-player maps.

Technology:
There are several different types of technical advances in the games, new weapons, versions of Mjolnir armor worn by the Spartans, ships, vehicles, and space travel.

Vehicles:
The book does a great job of explaining each vehicle, Human and Covenant. You can learn the strengths and weakness of the vehicles and strategic hints.

Weapons:
Last, but not least, the weapons of HALO. Learn about the weapons used by Human forces and the Covenant. A great way of better understanding the weapons you can use in game play.

Cons
This book is strictly about the games of HALO, I have not found any connections to the Novels and overall storyline of the HALO Universe. It is basically a very cool game guide for all the HALO games.

This book showed up in my Daily Gold Box Deals for around $10.50 and I figured 'why not'? After reading it and looking at all the pages, I can say it is worth the $10. It is a hardcover book, with every page being in color. I enjoyed the fact that they went through most everything associated with all the Halo games as of now, even Wars. I don't have a lot of extra time, and when I do, I game; I don't have time to read all the extra Halo books, but I did read through Halo Essentials. I can see how fans who have read extra Halo material would be disappointed to not find them here, but all the pictures in this book are taken directly from the games. While not every page goes into great detail, it is still a great thing to look at and reminisce about the days back and help jog your memory or maybe even find out something special you never knew about while playing through the games.
For the price, you really get a good buy.
I have a younger family member, Age 12, and he loves this book. This could be a great book for the younger people, as it is colorful with short descriptions and is science fiction.

The title of this review says it all, really. My son and I are avid HALO buddies and I bought him this book to look at during times when playing games is inappropriate (e.g. before bed time). I say "look at" as opposed to "read" for the simple fact that it is (surprise) a visually dense work. In spite of the many pictures there is, in fact, material to read. I find that the creators of this book/game have gone to great lengths to give an imaginative background to virtually every weapon, vehicle, character, and key terrain of the series.

While it doesn't have as much information as the Halo Encyclopedia, I think they did well in choosing what details to include in this book. It's also a much better organized book, free of the typos and other mistakes that unfortunately plagued the Encyclopedia. Entries are limited to people, places, and things that appeared in the games, but elements of the extended Halo universe do at least get mentioned in the entries. The images generally look very good, though those of the Halo Wars vehicles are understandably lower resolution than the rest. The book is also fairly portable, being quite a bit smaller than the massive DK tomes you might be used to. It's definitely worth the price for a fan of the franchise.

Great book for a Halo fan. My only issue is that the book is in alphabetical order about individual items of the Halo world. I would have enjoyed reading it more if it were grouped in time line order by Covenant and UNSC. It would have made it more the story of Halo, and not a kind of cold reference book. Still, it has lots of good information in it about the Halo universe. Definitely worth it for any fan of Halo.

Well organised, attractive artwork, interesting text overviews ....... and covers most of the HALO series of games (1, 2, 3, ODST, Reach, Wars .... not 4, 5 or Wars 2). The reader won't find much new, but its still an interesting 'coffee table' book to browse.

RRP marked on the back is £9.99, so not sure why some are selling new at £25+?

so basicly the book is quite nice to have for maybe referance but to be honest I didnt learn anything that I didnt know before. if you are a devoted halo fan there wont be anything in this book that you wont already know, It is set out like an encyclopedia in alphabetical order and only really contains some not too interesting screenshots and no art which would have been better. to be honest you would be better off buying the halo encyclopedia. all in all the book is well worth the £7 asking price but no more as fans wont learn anything substantial.

I have purchased every Halo book that has been released and this is a fantastic and worthy addition to my collection. Firstly it was a great price which is always one of the most important things :D

Other that the price though, the book itself has great images and a good level of detail. Its extremely useful as a reference guide for certain things within the Halo universe however, it isnt incredibly detailed and you can usually find out more information on the Halo wiki, however, you cant put the Halo wiki on your Halo shelf :D
