About the Author

Stu Turner, WØSTU, holds an FCC Amateur Extra Class license. As a professional educator he served as a US Air Force Academy engineering professor for eight years where he honed his skills of making difficult topics fun and easy to understand.

With his radio club he regularly teaches weekend ham radio classes that include youth as young as 10, non-technical domestic engineers, trained electrical engineers, senior citizens, emergency responders, and everyone in between! Over the years his VE exam success rate consistently exceeds 90%.

When I was taking my Technician course I used the ARRL Technician's Class book. I found it disorganized and full of "filler". I hated having to jump across multiple chapters to find information pertaining to a particular section of the Technician's exam. So when I decided to continue on with my General license I went looking for something else. Based on reviews I decided to use this book. I found it much better in its organization and layout. The content offered some good background while remaining focused on the questions that belong to the General License question pool. The accompanying web site was also beneficial with videos and other resources that leant themselves to preparing for the exam and better understanding the topics.

I had several other members of the class who saw that I was using a book different that the ARRL book and asked to look at it. After looking through it they also commented that it seemed to be better organized and had less "fluff". I would recommend it to anyone studying for the General License exam.

I actually enjoyed reading the book! Thanks to Stu I was able to pass Tech, General and Extra in one sitting!

I was looking for a book that would help me understand the material, not just memorize the answers. This book is entertaining and engaging and he manages to present just enough background that you can actually understand the material without getting off tangent or overwhelming you. He uses relatable analogies to explain concepts, and makes it all as practical as possible. The exam questions and answers are weaved into the material seamlessly and they are easily identifiable. I have the ARRL Extra book and I think the way Stu weaves the questions and answers into the content and margins is brilliant and effective compared to the ARRL book.

After reading this book I was easily able to pass the General and Technician practice exams. With the background from this book I felt comfortable enough with the basics that I could peruse the ARRL Extra Manual and focus on the new concepts and additional detail needed to understand and pass the Extra exam.

I can't recommend this book highly enough (if you're interested in understanding the exam material), and just wish he had an Extra book as well 'cause I certainly would have used that one instead.

I teach amateur radio classes and have used several books for reference. The ARRL license manual, Gordon West, and the Stu Turner. I generally use the Gordon West, for it's easy to follow easy format. For students who study on their own, I recommend the Stu Turner. Students have mentioned they can follow and enjoy the learning layout and method used by Stu Turner over the Gordon West. Included with Stu Turner's is a computer site to augment the study process.

I highly recommend this over any other manual. This book should be the goto book for the general class license! It’s easy to understand, doesn’t use essoteric language like the arrl book, and isn’t bloated with unnecessary information. Now that I’ve passed my General I only wish that there was an extra class version of this book.

I got this to study for the general exam. I was disappointed when the used book I got was for questions through 2015, but after reading it, I'm not sure how much the questions have changed, and the book does a very good job of explaining not just the answers to the test, but the concepts behind the questions. It is also supported by a very good website (go check it out: hamradioschool.com).
I have read several other exam prep books, and I feel like this is the best I've seen by a long shot.

Stu is really enthusiastic about Amateur Radio and a great teacher...he used to be an instructor at the Air Force Academy to boot!

I purchased this book to study up for the General License test which, I have not taken yet.
The material is laid out in a thoughtful way and all the concepts a related in an easy to understand manner.

I highly recommend this book...and the Technician Course book as well, to anyone seeking to become active in amateur radio...two thumbs up.
