Luckily Stu didn't go that route and his book helps fulfill the intent of the testing in the first place: making sure that newly-licensed hams actually have the knowledge they need to use their privileges legally, safely and enjoyably.
My 14-year-old son went from having just enough knowledge to be dangerous to confidently passing the exam and ready for more in less than a couple of weeks with this book, and for that I can't thank Stu enough.
Highly recommended. I see the General edition is out now, time to order again!
August 26 2012 UPDATE:
I've been late in updating this review. I think this book is a great study tool for the Technicians license. It gives you a deeper look into the concepts and terminology. I like the Gordon West book too, but if this content is new to you then the Turner book is for you. For those of us who appreciate diagrams and depictions, there are plenty. I found the sections on transmitting and receiving and the associated pictures very helpful.
This book finds an excellent balance between the two approaches. It does highlight the exam questions but still gives you a broader understanding.
The author has a very readable style that keeps the technical material interesting. He explains radio concepts in a way that is easy to understand, which is especially helpful if the reader doesn't have a technical background.
This book is actually part of a learning system that includes a well-designed web site and smart phone apps. This combination is a great way to learn about ham radio! Highly recommended!
