Because it is so hard to find in local stores, I was thrilled to find this here, and am ordering a couple of the 12-packs.
BTW, Cheesy Hashbrowns is our favorite (but very hard to find) and Stroganoff is our 3rd favorite (but I wouldn't buy 12 at once)... and those are the only 3 flavors we ever buy now!
Chili Macaroni is one of the five Mexican flavors Hamburger Helper offers. Cheesy Enchilada, Cheesy Nacho, Crunchy Taco and Double Cheese Quesadilla are the others. Each package makes five one-cup servings. Our sons like the Old El Paso® seasoning; Hamburger Helper Lasagna and Hamburger Helper Beef Pasta are too bland for their tastes. This flavor has just the right amount of spice and seasonings to appeal to the under-10-year-old crowd. The box suggests adding a 4.5 oz. can of Old El Paso chopped green chiles five minutes before the end of the simmer time.
A prepared serving (one cup) has 270 calories, 570 mg of sodium and 0.5 g of fat; it also provides a good carb load - 22 grams - and 3 g of protein.
Adding the cost of the ground hamburger and vegetables as a side dish, we are able to feed two boys for less than $5 and still have enough leftovers to prepare them a weekend lunch.
In summary, while this isn't Haute cuisine, Betty Crocker Hamburger Helper Chili Macaroni is an inexpensive option when pressed for time. For price and convenience, I'd give the product a five-star rating. For taste, I give it two stars. Again, though, I'm not the target audience, so I'm settling on a three-star rating. The slogan on the box sums it up well, "One pound. One pan. One tasty meal."
I've made this with both ground beef and ground turkey and both turn out great. With a nice, beefy taste to it, this is one of the few dishes my picky daughter will go back to for seconds and thirds. My husband said one night that soon I'd need to make two boxes at once, but I think instead I'll just make side dishes to fill people up.
The current subscription price ($7.45 for 6 boxes) makes the price per box come out to $1.24 each box, which is the same as the cheapest sale price I can get at local stores. Usually the sale puts the boxes at $1.50 to $2.50 each, so it's already a bargain with free shipping.
