I used it twice and on both occasions when the waffles were ready (the light was green) and I attempted to open this waffle maker it ( for a lack of a better word) - exploded open. The lid just jumped open and the waffle maker fell over. It is so strange and scary at rhe same time. Afterall, the device is hot and to me this is a safety hazard.
After the first time this happened, I waited for a few months before I decided to use it again. Unfortunately, the second time ( which was today) turned out to be the same. I did not overfill the waffle maker in case if that is what you ate thinking. My waffle had hols in it since I was to scared to put too much batter. The only possitive thing I have to say about this waffle maker is the size. Overall, I would not recommend it.

I ordered this for a 'Waffle Party' so in a short time have already made over fifty waffles.
In that process I've figured out a few tips:
-It takes almost exactly 1/2 cup of waffle mix in each side to make a full waffle, so I just scoop with a 1/2 measuring cup.
-For waffles with a softer inside: Cook it for about 4 minutes on medium
-For a crispier / crunchier waffle go for five minutes.
-If you want the waffle to be more legitimately 'Belgian' style, add a slight bit more water than your recipe calls for and cook for a little over 4 minutes, that should give you a nice crispy on the outside / soft on the inside waffle.
If you want something fancier with bells and whistles, spend more money.
For the cost this is simply a wonderful waffle maker.

Totally uneven heat and worst customer service ever!

I had never made waffles before and decided to start at the shallow and dip my toe in with a less expensive model. Well I guess you get what you pay for! I read all of the instructions and followed the advice of oiling the plates first and then spraying a little each time. Unfortunately no matter what I did the bottom was beautiful cooked and golden and the top was totally burned (see photo) This was cooked on the lowest heat setting and if I cooked it for less time the middle was not cooked through. I was willing to think maybe I had done something wrong and get advice so I tried calling Hamilton Beach customer service. Was told it would be approximately and 18 minute hold time. I was on hold for an HOUR AND 17 MINUTES! Once I finally got through the customer support agent was incredibly unhelpful, bordering on rude. She just said return it. When I asked if this was a common issue for this model she just said she wouldn't know because it was a newer model. So returning it I am and I will never be buying from Hamilton Beach again!

My kids have been asking me to make waffles, I finally decided on buying this square one. (We have an Olaf one, cute but not easy to use)
Waffle turn out really well, once you get the hang of it.
No issues with batter leaking from sides once I close it. Even if I fill it up with batter.
You can adjust the temp (my setting stays in medium) my kids do like it a bit crunchy, just have to watch it, after a while i sort of figure out when to take the waffle out before it burns.
I have no complaint so far. I find this easy to use maybe I’ll make waffles more often than rarely, since my kids prefer this than pancakes.
I’ll update this if I ever had any issues.
