I also bought a giant cookbook "Fix-It and Forget It" by Phyllis Good with 1400 Slow-Cooker recipes. This is full of middle-America comfort food things like hamburger rice casserole or chili cornbread. No fancy gur-may city food here. More like Iowa Sunday dinner, with jello and 3-bean salads as side dishes. Now I intend to try all these recipes, one a week, which will take just under 27 years. So let's check the longevity angle at the same time. I'm 68 now; see my full report here on Amazon when I'm 95. Heh heh.
For the price of one decent crock pot, you get one solid cooker with 3 diffrenrnt sized ceramic crocks, which absolutely makes a difference depending on the volume of what you're coming in it.
It comes with three heat settings, depending on how long you need to cool what's in it. Typically I only use the low setting, but if I need something made in 3 hours instead of 6-8 I use higher settings, with a solid stir every 60 minutes to prevent burning (never had anything burn, but I do it just in case).
I have made everything from chicken and veggies to chicken stock to chili to dips and it works like a charm every time.
Only downside is it doesn't have a digital temp setting, but you would be spending 4 times as much for three crock pots of similar sizes with that feature....definitely can't beat the value!
And then there is the problem that the device cannot be used with an external timer. I really wanted a slow cooker that is small and programmable but I couldn't find one. So I thought I would simply plug it into a timer. In principle this would work; however not with this cooker. Everytime the cooker is turned on one has to select (push a button) the size of bowle that is used. This cannot be pushed before it is turned on, therefore a delayed start is not possible. That's a real bummer. I wish I would have known this before - then I wouldn't have bought it.
