Hamilton Beach Digital Steamer
Make mealtime more exciting and your plate more nutritionally balanced with colorful, vitamin-packed foods. It’s easy with the Hamilton BeachDigital Steamer. Add your choice of vegetables, seafood, or chicken breasts and you’re minutes away from serving a satisfying steamed meal the whole family will enjoy. With a Food Steamer in your kitchen, you can take advantage of the bounty of healthy, in-season produce at your local farmer’s market or grocery store. If you’re lucky enough to have your own garden, you can reap the rewards and the satisfaction of steaming your own freshly picked vegetables. Once you add gently steamed vegetables and seafood to your meal rotation, canned and frozen foods lose their appeal. Don’t be surprised if the Digital Steamer earns a permanent place on your kitchen counter because it’s so versatile and easy to use. Fill it with water, place one or two of the transparent bowls filled with food atop the base and set the cooking timer. Steaming a balanced meal
The Digital Food Steamer lets you prepare a whole meal in one, easy-to-use appliance. You can steam seafood or chicken breasts in the bottom bowl and vegetables in the top. Since food cooks faster in the bottom bowl, always place food with longer steaming times on first, closer to the base. Another option for cooking different types of food is to place one bowl (filled with food with longer steaming times) onto the base and steam first; then later add the second bowl filled with food that has shorter steaming times. For example, green beans and squash have shorter cooking times; foods with longer cooking times include red potatoes, sliced carrots, chicken breasts, and fish steaks.
Steaming white and brown rice
The rice bowl is designed for steaming rice and small amounts of food inside the steaming bowl. To steam rice, place rice and water into the rice bowl. A good rule of thumb for cooking rice is two parts water to one part rice. Fill the water reservoir to the MAX line, place the rice bowl inside the lower steaming bowl and top with the lid.
Food that is ready when you are
The next time you have a workout, sports activity, or meeting that interferes with your family’s mealtime, let the Digital Food Steamer take over. To set DELAY START, fill the water reservoir to the MAX line and place food into one or two steaming bowls. Press the up/down arrows to set your delay time. When your delay time expires, food will steam for your selected cooking time, then switch to warm for up to one hour. Do not use DELAY START for raw fish, seafood, meat or poultry. Start time can be set up to 24 hours in advance for ultimate convenience.
Tips and care
If the water level in the steamer becomes too low, the Digital Food Steamer will switch OFF and flash '- -. ' Fill the unit with water to the MAX line, then push the ON/OFF button to restart the steamer. Never operate the steamer without water in the reservoir or use a liquid other than water for cooking purposes, as this may damage the unit.
Avoid blocking too many steaming holes by overcrowding the steaming bowls with food; this doesn’t leave enough room for adequate steam flow and could result in food that is not uniformly steamed. The steaming bowls, drip tray and removable collar are dishwasher safe. Wash the lid and the removable divider in warm, soapy water. Do not immerse the base in water or other liquid. Instead, allow it to cool and wipe the inside of the base with a damp cloth.

First time I used it my dad was coming over for dinner, he's been on a health kick so I thought it'd be a good time to try it out. We seasoned some chicken breast, and some small potatoes, carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower. I'm kind of paranoid when it comes to undercooked food so we mayyyy have set the timer a bit long because our veggies were steamed to hell (complete first time user error). Chicken was good and we were able to feed 3 adults a child and two toddlers (we made a side salad and some mac and cheese) yum!
Next I made boiled eggs! Easy!
Then it was salmon filets! Easy again!
This thing rocks. I can get my family fed with virtually no mess and no pain, no fat, no bad.
The only cons FOR ME are:
1) the clear parts are not dishwasher safe
2) the clear part that is removable. Now when I first set it up and put the clear tray in the little lip that's supposed to hold it I thought, oh this isn't so bad, why are there so many reviews saying this things slides out easily, I think it's fine. WRONG! When I made salmon filets, I forgot allllll about that piece when I was cleaning up, turned around to walk it to the sink and it slid out, sending fish bits (yuck) lemon slices, and seasoning all over my floor. I thought oooohhhhh, that's what they were talking about... D'oh! So be careful.
Anyway other than that this thing has been awesome. I can get my family fed, easy, healthy and actually kind of fun. My husband and kids think I'm some awesome domestic goddess when it's really the work of cool kitchen gadgets like these. Put some seasoning on, push a few buttons and kick your feet up and enjoy!
Definitively worth ....
Great for inserting more healthy "snacks" into your TV time routine. Skip the salty chips once in awhile and replace with some healthy, steamed veggies and boiled eggs! Put some broccoli florets, baby carrots and raw eggs in, set it for 20min and once they cool for a couple of minutes, you'll be snacking like a Supermodel! Steamed veggies and boiled eggs are GOOD for your body...So lose those unhealthy, salty snack chips!
Haven't tried anything exotic yet. Quite happy steaming veggies & eggs for snacking right now. And for that purpose, this steamer works like a charm!
1/16/2014 UPDATE - Steamed Rice Instructions WRONG
There are a couple of "misprints" in the instruction manual. Page 4 says, "A good ratio for cooking rice is 2 parts water to 1 part rice."
Then on page 8 it says, "White, long grain --- 1 cup rice --- 1 to 1-1/2 cups water --- 20-25 minute cook time"
Obviously those conflict somewhat on the rice to water ratio. The 1 cup rice to 2 cups water ratio will produce nice, fluffy rice...Problem is, if you cook it 20-25 min, it's going to be CRUNCHY, uncooked rice! If you look on the front of the unit, the last picture is RICE and it says, "35-40 minutes"...THIS is the correct cooking time. So put 1 cup rice and 2 cups water in RICE BOWL, make sure the water reservoir is filled to MAX line, place Rice Bowl in Lower (or only) Steam Bowl, put lid on tight, set time for 35-40 min (I use 37min) and you're golden. Makes enough for 2-4 people.
The cons of this steamer are these: 1. The top section, the plate does fall through if you aren't careful enough to lay it correctly on the narrow lip.. 2. The coating that is put over the control buttons, does crack with use. It will eventually make the reading of the print hard to read, but with only four buttons, it should cause no real problem. 3. The handle came off the lid. Somehow the lid must have gotten too hot around the metal screw. The handle came off and left a perfectly round hole where the handle attaches.
In spite of the problems with this steamer, I would probably buy another to replace this one when it finally needs to be tossed. I think the company needs to do some improvements on the lid and the base control covering that they use to keep the controls in tact. Also the lip on the upper container should be a bit wider.
