I thought for the price if the skillet performed well it would still be a great buy. I also considered that a multi function item should not be expected to perform as well/quickly as a single function item.
I'll address some of the issues by other reviewers here:
- It gets hot - Yep, it does. I have never owned an electric skillet that the pan and top did not get hot. The skillet handle and the knob on the lid were the only parts that did not get hot. Of course the lid also did not have a heating element. After looking closely at the pictures I decided to include Duncan 2-Piece Short Handle Holder, Red with the order. Worked out perfectly. I can insert a my thumb on one side and two fingers on the other to handle the short handles. (BTW- the handles are imprinted with the word "HOT" so am surprised many people stated they were burned).
-The non-stick coating peels- This was a common complaint of mine until I read some where that non-stick cookware should ALWAYS have at least a small amount of oil or water while heating. After that discovery I have always washed my new non-stick cookware with a gentle detergent such as 1 piece of Palmolive Original Dish Liquid Soap - 14oz and rubbed the entire surface with a light coating of oil (No commercial cooking spray with lechithin - the same article warned against its use) and heated it at a low temp till the oil just starts to smoke. Then I turn off the heat and let the item come to room temp and wipe with a dry paper towel. I did this with the HB Master skillet inserts and with the waffle inserts and of course I add oil to the inserts before use.No peeling and I don't expect it for a long time.
-The waffle maker doesn't work well- This unit is only 650w and is not going to bake the waffles as quickly as a higher wattage waffle iron. I oil the inserts and set it the temp as the directions state. I leave the waffle baking till it stops steaming. Yes, the top doesn't get as brown as the bottom so when the steam starts getting low I open it and turn the waffle over , close the top and let it bake till the steam stops. The waffle is about six inches in diameter.
-The skillet moves around- It does not lock in as the top insert and waffle inserts do. Makes it possible to lift the skillet insert to slide eggs, omelet, etc onto the plate. I do cook my sausage/bacon (cut the strips in half ) then cook my 2 eggs. Its a 6 inch diameter skillet after all. Makes great burgers, and does about anything a regular electric skillet does, only on a smaller scale. I also use it to heat the small cans of veggies too. Works fine. Just pour off most of the liquid before adding to the skillet.
The clean up is easy. I just poor a little water into the skillet or bottom waffle plate, close the lid and unplug. By the time the unit has cooled any food residue just wipes away. A little oil on a paper towel wiped over the surface then put it away.
I am happy more products are coming to market for smaller households. Much needed for us Baby Boomers.
I so happy with Hamilton Beach 26046 The Breakfast Master Skillet and Waffle Maker. It is so versatile and I now have so many meal options on the road. With this and a small contact grill I am cooking away and loving it. Saves me lots of $$$ and the food is better.
I used my own recipe with handmade “bisqick” and club soda. I was making them for my toddler so I set it to make fluffy not crunchy waffles. It worked perfectly.
Nothing stuck to the plates, took about 5-6 mins and turned out fluffy how I wanted. You can adjust that to make crunchy waffles if you want too.
Cleanup I just wiped it down and put it away after it cooled down.
Simple. Easy. Delicious. Very happy with this purchase.
