Breakfast Trend On the Rise
Breakfast isn't called the most important meal of the day without good cause. Jumpstarting your day with a nutritious breakfast has shown to improve mental performance, give you energy and healthy carbohydrates, and help reduce mindless snacking. What's more, where breakfast is prepared and bought has changed over the years. Instead of traditional breakfast meals and times anymore, consumers are now having breakfast at all times of the day, reinterpreting breakfast foods in creative ways and cooking at home.
The removable waffle grids are dishwasher safe. To clean the drip tray, rinse off excess overflowed batter with hot water. For easy cleanup and storage, wipe down the exterior with a damp, soapy cloth and fold the handle. Do not use steel wool, scouring pads, abrasive cleansers or sharp or pointed objects on any part, as this will tarnish the steel exterior.
Before pouring batter into grids, always spray them with a small amount of nonstick cooking spray. Waffle color and crispiness are determined by the temperature of the grids, so the higher the temperature, the browner and crisper the waffle. If the cover of the waffle maker doesn't lift up easily, let your waffle cook a little longer before lifting the lid again. To store waffles for later reheating, pack in airtight container and keep in the refrigerator or freezer.
Mix In Your Favorite Toppings & Spices
Don't care for plain waffles or need a snazzy new breakfast recipe? Tasting is believing with Hamilton Beach. To mix things up, reduce the amount of batter that you're using and stir one of these sweet treats into the batter before cooking:
- Maple syrup
- Cinnamon sugar
- Fresh or dried fruit
- Pecans or walnuts
TIP: If using nuts in waffle batter, use chopped nuts and/or evenly spread batter to allow lid to fully close.

The 2nd waffle iron DID NOT HEAT TO NEEDED TEMPERATURE (as indicated by many other reviews). A call to Hamilton Beach customer support was no help. I was advised to pre-heat and cook longer. Still did not finish waffles. I turned on the waffle maker with the grids removed, and realized that the heating elements were not turning red. Another call to Hamilton Beach was no help at all. Due to a family vacation, I waited too long to return the 2nd none-functioning waffle maker.
But I still love the 1st working unit.
I purchased a 3rd Waffle Iron. When it arrived and was fresh of the delivery truck, I unboxed the unit, removed the grids and plugged the unit in. The heating elements glowed a reassuring red and generated lots of heat.
Bottom line is that the product is outstanding if you get one that works. Do the "red heating element visual test" as soon as your product arrives. If you got a good one congrats, if not, send that puppy back and request a replacement, repeat as needed. My batting average is .666 (2 for 3).
I love this product's design and the waffles that it makes. Just make sure the one that is delivered can heat up to the desired temperature...
My favorite waffle maker is the Waring Pro only because it is a little better made and it comes with recipes; although a few people said this one stopped working for them. For me it has always worked. The Krups waffle maker, which was the only one I purchased myself, is a dissapointment. However, this Hamilton Beach is a close second to the Waring Pro and the price listed as of this writing is about $7 cheaper. Below are the PROS and CONS:
- It makes nice Belgian waffles; just as good as my Waring Pro. A setting of 2-1/2 turned the waffles nicely brown.
- The indicator light turns green when the unit is ready for the batter and when the waffles are done.
- The waffle maker is easy to flip.
- It has a collapsible handle for storage.
- The waffle irons are easily removed for cleaning (something my other two waffle makers don't have). This is a great feature.
- Any spillage is caught by the plastic drip tray which is very easy to clean.
- The waffle irons and drip tray are dishwasher safe as long as the SANI setting on the dishwasher is not used. I don't use the dishwasher, so this point about being dishwasher safe was not tested by me but the instructions say this is possible so I'll take them at their word.
- The unit feels cheaply made.
- No recipes come with the unit.
- The cord is 26 inches--short but typical of many appliances today.
- Some of the batter I used got stuck in the creases toward the back of the unit where the waffle maker opens. That part is difficult to clean but no more difficult than any other unit I have. In fact, if batter is accidentally spilled in the creases, some will remain behind as a toothpick does not even get it out.
Based on my results, I do feel this belgian waffle maker is very good even though it does feel cheaply made. The removable waffle irons are a great feature because this makes the unit so much easier to clean than the other two Belgian waffle makers I have.
Pros: The ability to remove the plates for easy cleaning. The drip pan which can easily be removed which keeps counters clean and is easy to clean itself. The rotating handle with an arrow for directional purposes, which folds away for better storage. The sleek design. The ability to add 1-3 minutes of extra crisping time for your waffles. The green/red indicator lights which let you know when your waffles are ready. Waffles lift off with ease with the use of cooking spray. The ability to cook up more than just waffles (look for recipes online). And lastly, of course, a nice crisp browned waffle.
Cons: For a family of four, it is going to take you about 30-40 minutes to make 4 waffles. Not exactly ideal unless you aren't rushing to get out the door and people don't mind waiting 10 minutes between waffles. The white waffles I kept getting initially that were no where near crisp and almost had me returning the product. Yes, the instructions warned of such things, but most people don't read the manuals and I wasted essentially a box of waffle mix just waiting to get one brown waffle. There is a ready indicator light, but there is no sound to indicate your waffles are ready so you kind of have to hover and come back to see if your waffles are done.
Overall, if you are the patient type, this waffle iron will be the one for you. I have no complaints now that I am actually getting crisp waffles other than the time required to make a larger batch for family. The cleaning function really is a major plus as is the rotating feature which ensures a more even cook.
