Hamilton Beach 33969A Set 'n Forget Programmable Slow Cooker
For the cook who is busy all day but wants a home-cooked dinner at night, a slow cooker is the answer. And with the Set & Forget Programmable Slow Cooker, technology takes a big leap forward from the outdated slow cookers found in yesterday’s kitchens.
In addition to offering modern convenience, the Set & Forget Programmable Slow Cooker has three choices for easy, automatic cooking: program, probe and manual mode. On busy days, program the cooking time and Set & Forget Slow Cooker automatically shifts to keep warm when the cooking time is up. Cooking a large cut of meat like pot roast, chicken, or pork tenderloin? Insert the probe, set the desired meat temperature and the Set & Forget Slow Cooker automatically shifts to keep warm when the temperature is reached. For traditional slow cooking, manually select the high, low or warm temperature without setting a cooking time.
Three (3) choices for easy, automatic cooking: program, probe and manual
Probe mode is perfect for cooking large cuts of meat or for recipes that require food to reach a certain temperature
Thermometer probe reads the actual temperature of food as it cooks; the temperature is displayed on the slow cooker control panel
6 quart removable stoneware crock fits a 6 lb. chicken or a 4 lb. roast

What I did as soon as I got it: Lift out the ceramic pot. Washed the crock with warm soapy water. Then I made a large amount of beef stew, 3 pounds of barely pan browned stew meat, with half a jar of spaghetti sauce as a seasoning. This cooked on low for 5 hours. Saved all the extra liquid and 3/4 c of beef bits from the stew adding two cups of stock, and immediately made a lentil, barley, and green pea soup, right in the same session, cooking on high for an hour. Now I have enough food frozen for four meals.
As to the smell that was mentioned in some reviews, almost all new electric cooking devices have a "new" smell. If you realize that some of the adhesives, oil, etc needed to put the device together might burn off, then you are mentally ok with it. In about 15 minutes that process is done, and you won't have it again.
Everything about this slow cooker was perfect when it was working. I didn't find, as other reviewers had, that the Warm setting was too hot or that it would turn itself off randomly throughout the day. I was very happy with my purchase until one day I had seared off a roast and filled the crock with vegetables and was looking forward to a yummy dinner at the end of the day when I plugged the unit in and pushed the power button and got no response at all. Not a beep or even a flash of the LED. I tried changing to a different outlet and unplugging it a few times, but had no luck. I even thought that maybe the LED was just broken and that the unit might actually still work, but still no luck.
And this was within a week of purchase. I used it a total of three times, and on the fourth attempt it was completely dead. So I sent it back and my search for a good, reliable slow cooker continues.
I have only used the thermometer a few times, but that is the most efficient way to cook (energy wise), and is great for roasts / meats. I tend to smoke my meats in a smoker and predominantly do soups / stews / caserols, so I mostly use the timer or manual setting to warm my smoked meats up again. Otherwise standard 4 hrs high, or 8 hrs low when cooking anything with raw meats is perfect when loaded to the gills. Once time elapses (or thermometer reaches desired temp) it then switches to warm for another several hours, keeping your food safe and NOT BURNT! Or you can just set these to manual high, medium, and warm.
Tip 1: you do not ever need to pre-cook the meat for slow cookers except to remove (drain) fat. If you use lean cuts / or ground meats of 90 or greater, just throw it all in the slow cooker and give it the proper 4hrs high or 8 hours low, and your good to go.Read more ›
This thing also unleashes a massive odor on its first use, like running a soldering iron, which is apparently a normal part of first using the heating element. After 5 minutes my house smelled terrible. I can't understand why they wouldn't cure the heating element at the factory.

The timer and thermometer probe settings are easy to use and handy, but this is just too hot. High is boiling, and low is still too high. Read morePublished 4 days ago by Stepone
