First, I like how the toaster and the oven part are separate. With our previous two units, we put the bread (toast) into the oven part and just put the setting onto "toast." With this Hamilton Beach unit, the toaster is totally separate...put the bread into the top slots and toast! We've found that the bread comes out exactly how we set it. We usually toast just plain bread, but we have put bagels in there too with no problems.
Most of what we use this for is the oven part. Almost every day we are baking veggies, warming up frozen french fries, or making mini pizzas in there. When you open the door to the oven part, the tray comes out at you, so it's very easy to access the tray when it is hot, without having to put your hand entirely in there. While the oven area is not very deep, it is the perfect size for my family and what we use it for. If you have a large family and are trying to make french fries for 5 people, it may be too small of a unit for you. For us, it's perfect.
Since we use toaster ovens multiple times a day, it is not uncommon for ours to break within the year. I know they shouldn't break that quickly, but we've had it happen. This Hamilton Beach unit has been going strong for a year and a half now and still works just as well as it did on Day 1...even if it is a little dirtier, since I don't keep up with cleaning it out as often as I should! But with cleaning....since the bottom tray slides out, it is very easy to clean out the crumbs and mess that naturally accumulate in the bottom of a toaster.
Highly recommend this product!
Hamilton Beach 22708 Toastation 2-Slice Toaster and Mini Oven, Black
This is my own opinion of the product and yours may vary. I received no monetary compensation and I am not required to give a good review. If you look at all my reviews, you will see I do not always leave 5 stars and will point out flaws in a product. If my review was helpful to you, would you please vote yes. I provide honest feedback with the pros and cons I can see in a product as well as facts that a potential customer might find useful.
Main downside of the 22703 is a very strong first use odor: I had to run unit in an open garage for an hour or so before using it with food. Also while I think the rack hooks on the door are must haves, they do make it more difficult to remove the rack completely for cleaning.Takes some practice.
And it should be noted that
BOTH retro Ensembles 22703 that I ordered from Amazon (package labels said they came directly from Ham-Beach) had minor exterior damage: one with scratch and one with a dent and ding (this one also had ill-fitting (hard to slide) rack and was returned.) Also, BOTH 22703s had the strong odor issue.
I had also purchased a standard style 22720 from local Ace Hardware but after only a month light use the function switch knob came off so it was returned also. However, it didn't have the strong odor problem. Too bad it's design and build flaws far outweighed that virtue making it worthy of a One Star rating at best.
So what do I think is good about the Toastation? Simply, it's truly a 2-in-1 appliance which is ideal for very small kitchens. While the toasting function is not perfect (can't expect it to be given only two heater element rods)and the oven is quite small, it performs both functions adequately within a very very small footprint and modest price ($30-$50 depending on vendor).
As to being sure about getting the version with removable crumb tray and door hooks for rack, Ham-Beach seems unable to provide some kind of distinguishing identifier. The units I got from Amazon were labeled 22703H.But that model # is the same as on Ham-Beach website and H-B says those are ONLY the new versions with drop down crumb tray and no door hooks. So go figure. Seems like H-B has product info gaps and confusion.
Bottom line is if yon can find the older version, this is an innovative and capable product. I'd gladly pay more for one that is a bit more robustly built and has a timer. (I'll report back if there are serious durability issues).
UPDATE: 11/28/16: After using this Toastation for a few months I find it really is inadequate for most toasting needs. The toaster makes toasted 'stripes' on bread from the minimal rod heating/toasting elements and it's virtually impossible to get two regular slices of bread in at the same time. If I try toasting a bagel as product picture shows, one side of each bagel gets burned every time. I find I'm having to use the oven function for toasting. The oven gets quite hot and does work very well for almost everything: toasting, melting, baking potatoes, etc. However, the opening is really just too narrow: I had to cut a sweet potato lengthwise to fit it in.
While this appliance might work for a dorm room or for someone who cooks fairly flat items, it really doesn't perform well enough for daily use in a conventional kitchen. And if I have to do toasting in the oven section anyway, I might as well just get a similarly sized regular toaster oven with a much larger opening. So off this goes to Goodwill. And if I could give a half star, I'd now rate this at 2 1/2 STARS max.
