Carson Holloway's remarkable work examines the great debates that occurred during George Washington's presidency between his two most brilliant cabinet officers. Hamilton's and Jefferson's arguments continue to influence the American political order, and thanks to Carson Holloway's work we are now better equipped to understand the principles and practices of these two statesmen. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. Important note: the other "reviews" posted here as of this date are based on price, not on the content of the book. Do not be put off by these "reviews" -- this book is a must have for anyone interested in the American founding and in the current state of the American experiment.

Although this book is somewhat pricey, I found it worth every penny, and think most readers will. This work is a tour de force of the most important political issues of the early American republic. I am familiar with literature about the Founders and, more than most other works in this genre, this book offers more depth about the specific political debates that divided two of the most important Founders. His engagement with the larger philosophical and political presuppositions that animate these debates is remarkable and clarifies the fundamental issues underlying the honest disagreements between Hamilton and Jefferson. The author writes in an even-handed (and elegant) manner which I often find lacking in such works. It will be interesting to see how this important book is received in political circles.
So, I guess, yes it is somewhat expensive, but as I have found in books and so much of life, you get what you pay for.

Holloway's book gives a blow by blow account of the political and constitutional arguments between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson when they both served in George Washington's cabinet. This story is fascinating in itself, and readers of this book will get a much deeper knowledge of it than is provided by most textbook accounts. In addition, however, Holloway shows how these debates are relevant to our politics today. We are still debating many of the questions that divided Hamilton and Jefferson: the scope of the government's powers, the role of the government in the economy, the principles that should guide our foreign policy. Serious students of American politics and American history will find in this book a very valuable resource.

Carson Holloway’s book is originally conceived and masterfully realized. In Federalist no. 1, Hamilton wrote, “My motives must remain in the depository of my own breast: My arguments will be open to all, and may be judged of by all.” Too many discussions of Hamilton’s and Jefferson’s fraught relationship are built on the uncertain foundation of Hamilton’s and Jefferson’s respective motives, both political and personal. Holloway takes his bearings from Hamilton’s advice to focus on what is more objective, political arguments. Organizing his book as a kind of dialogue between Hamilton and Jefferson on the principles and practice of republican constitutional politics, Holloway guides us through the labyrinth of questions, both constitutional and regarding policy, addressed by these two great American statesmen during the first Washington administration, in which they both served with distinction. He treats their arguments sympathetically but not uncritically, judiciously informing his reader of the relative strength of the arguments he so fairly and rigorously recapitulates. This book is a masterwork of American political thought and provides an excellent model for scholars who study the great debates of America’s best political thinkers.

Carson Holloway's book is a must for anyone interested in the early days of the American republic. It is far too easy to caricature Jefferson and Hamilton and to simplify their disagreements into tired clichés. Holloway avoids these temptations and instead offers serious reflection on the particular issues facing America after the ratification of the Constitution, such as the National Bank, economic policy, the rise of parties, and the U.S. response to the French Revolution. Anyone who wants to understand the United States today has to understand where we started, and this book is incredibly helpful for serious-minded readers who want to get to the heart American politics.
