Kindergarten-Grade 4-- Mariotti has once again created a unique photographic essay, this time with an Olympic games theme. Brilliantly painted hands are artfully posed and photographed to depict many of the track-and-field events as well as boxing, weight lifting, gymnastics, and fencing. They achieve varying degrees of success in execution; those of the swimming and diving competitions are not very effective. The hand coming through torn paper to represent breaking water lacks aesthetic appeal, and is uninspired. The individual events do not have the fluidity of the soccer game as in Hands Off (Kane/Miller, 1990). Amusing the first time through, but basically not gold-medal material. --Beth Irish, Orange Public Library, CA
