Hey there! I’m Kamran Siddiqi. Feel free to call me Kam; most of my friends and family do.

I am the self-taught cook & baker, writer, photographer, designer, and dishwasher for the blog Sophisticated Gourmet (http://www.sophisticatedgourmet.com/). I am a New Yorker residing in New Jersey, and I recently wrote a cookbook called Hand Made Baking: Recipes to Warm The Heart.

I was brought up in a family of food lovers. We put food at the center of everything, and cook seasonally. During the winter months, smells of hand made cakes and flavorful pies dance through the house. In May, mustard greens and glorious green leaves of spinach are cooked down to make Saag (essentially: an Indian spiced spinach dish) the very way my great-grandmother taught our family to make it. In the summer there are several punnets of venetian-red strawberries and crimson tomatoes à gogo.

Growing up, restaurant visits were rare, and were only left for special occasions. We always cooked, and I loved that. Homemade Indian flatbreads were made daily– a family affair after my parents came home from work. Both of my parents come from two very different, yet similar, backgrounds. My father is a native of Pakistan, and was born into a (mostly) Punjabi family that breaths good food. My mother was born in New York to a father from Cádiz, Spain and a Mother from The Dominican Republic; although they lived a very frugal lifestyle here in the States, everything was always homemade and delicious.

Great book but seller sent used copy!
The book itself is perfect - the recipes are approachable and easy to follow. However, this was listed as a new item and it was clearly used. There are food stains on the pages, the cover is worn, and pages were dog eared.

This is a fantastic baking book and I say that as someone who has been baking for over thirty-five years. I bought it for the bagel recipe and I have made many of the other recipes in the book. The pie-dough recipe is simple and has not failed me yet. The steps are clearly outlined, the photos are artistic yet simple, and the 'voice' of the author can be heard throughout as he tells us why he makes certain recipes, or whom they remind him of. Love this book, so glad I found it. And by the way, the Dutch Baby recipe is fool-proof. It comes out of the oven, every time, like a spectacular crown. Made a quick fresh cranberry compote to go with it and my hubby of twenty years looked at me in awe and said, "Can I marry you again?"
Great book. Well done Mr. Siddiqi.

I received this book as a gift from my husband because I bake A LOT and I never thought I would find recipes that would even come close to replacing those I've made for years. However, some of these recipes are true gems. The writing is heartfelt, just like the act of baking should be, and I haven't come across a bad recipe yet from this book. Even the pie crust, a staple and basic in any kitchen, was flaky and light. The cookies have all been to die for, the flourless chocolate cake was amazing and so far the two bread recipes have been delicious and easy. A wonderful cookbook even for those bakers who have a full shelves of books because some days you just want something easy and delicious without all the fuss.

Great recipes! I really love these recipes, I’m from New York and apparently the author must be too because He talks about NY quite a bit. The crumb cake recipe made me cry ( literally) because it reminded me of my dad and how he would buy crumb cake for us when we were little. He was from Brooklyn, and the author states that this recipe and crumb cake were born and bred in Brooklyn .So funny how food can bring back memories that are special like this. For that recipe alone this book is worth it for me.

I like the presentations and the layout of the book. This is a nice book for the beginning baker. I have been baking for over 45 years so I am very familiar with the recipes and best techniques.
The bagels were very good. The cinnamon rolls a bit bready for my taste but nice and I have much better recipes for a fluffier dough. All in all a good read with and a stepping stone for beginning bakers

Great New York bagel recipe!

Upon first glance I was tempted to just eat the actual book right away. After reading it I'm glad I didn't! Kamran is like a baker's guardian angel without sounding like a know-it-all. He gives helpful tips and encourages your creativity when making his recipes. It feels like he's in your kitchen, baking alongside you, maybe engaging you in a flour fight and always insisting there be a taste test! After reading this book I feel like I've known Kamran my whole life. His book is full of warm memories, wicked humor, laughter, and spirit. After all, what is good food without some good company to go with it? And Kamran is truly exceptional company in the kitchen, and anywhere else for that matter. When you make his beautiful treats you not only taste his memories and emotions, but you then begin making your own. Kamran's personality shines throughout this wonderful cookbook and I can't wait to get into my kitchen and dig my hands into some butter and flour. It's so much more than a cookbook! Well done Kamran, well done!

I have long been a fan of Kamran's website, "The Sophisticated Gourmet" and have eagerly anticipated the arrival of his book. It is everything I expected - wonderful recipes, beautiful photos and Kamran's clear, lyrical writing. I'd write more, but I'm off to the kitchen to make his "Samee" cookies! Put this cookbook on your Christmas wish list - it would also make an awesome gift for the foodie in your life!
