This was the first book I've read by this author, and I can't say I'm inclined to hunt down others. I found the writing (especially in the first half of the book), to be slightly stilted and juvenile, almost as if written for a middle or high school creative writing class (although no kid in a creative writing class EVER writes a "happily ever after"). But there was enough of interest to keep me reading until the end, and it wasn't a complete waste of time. Inevitably one tries to imagine oneself in such a position, and it's hard to know how one would act or feel. Overall the author did a fairly good job of telling a convincing, sympathetic story.

This book was just okay. I felt that the Hero was too passive. He let everything up to the H to sort out. they just slid in to sex and into love and the book was just okay because of that. There was no spark between these 2 ppl.

Beautifully written. A poignant story about family, love, loss, healing, and finding love after loss. The story moves along so nicely, with wonderful character development, to where you feel as if you actually know Marla and Sean and the Anderson's. The story takes place in a southern coastal town called Bay Point and just as with the first novel from Jennifer Ransom, this novel has ignited my creative juices and has inspired me to try something new and exciting...I am cooking gumbo for the first time in my life tonight! I've actually got the shrimp thawing in the fridge, as I type and I plan to cook the rue just as Merrie teaches Marla to do, in Hand Me Down Love, just before Merrie passes away of a brain tumor. I never knew cooking gumbo could be so powerful and emotional, but as Merrie teaches her younger sister Marla the steps to her delicious gumbo, I cried and cried and cried; I felt as if I was in this moment, with these two sisters. And then, when Merrie asks her sister to look after her husband, after she's gone...oh my, I cried some more. It's just such a touching story; very real, very raw and very captivating.

The narrative style pulls you in, plus the dialog and the moving along of the plot...I just couldn't put this book down. It starts off strong and stays strong until you reach the end and are left wanting more. Can't wait to read the next book from this author.

I truly enjoyed the story line and the characters, however I rolled my eyes several times throughout. During those eye rolling moments it seemed the story was written by a teenager. I found I had to read a few things twice to understand. Again I enjoyed the story and found myself wondering how real life would play out in that situation.

I had just finished reading "The Sweetest Revenge" by this author when I wanted to try another book by her. Unfortunately, I wish this hadn't been the one I chose.
The writing was great and it was easy to read, but I wasn't too keen on Sean. I felt sorry for Marla and thought she deserved so much better than a man who would never put her first or fight for her. He just went with the flow and did his own thing regardless of who he was hurting. I understand he was grieving and maybe things should never have progressed as fast as they did, but then he took off and things happened and when he came back, I wasn't feeling their HEA.
Disappointed 2.5 stars with this one. Might read the reviews on other books before I try this author again.

This book has such an incredible story, even just after the first few pages I already feel the emotion coming right through that the author is trying to express. All the characters seem really raw and real and the writing is written in such a good way that it's impossible to find any flaws in the story. If you're looking for a book full of plot twists you'd never see coming, then you have to give this a read - I definitely recommend this

I really liked this book. It is a story about love, loss, finding yourself and back to love again.
It was well written, the storyline flowed well and I loved the characters in the story.
Marla and Meredith (Merrie) were sisters and best friends. Merrie found out that she had a
brain tumor and asked her sister if she could look after her husband Sean once she passed.
Merrie made Marla promise and she kept her word to her sister.

Sean was devastated by the loss of his wife. He completely loss his grip on reality it seemed.
Sean needed help to just make it through the day and as promised, Marla was there to pick
up the pieces for Sean, even though she was also coping with her sisters death.

Sean and Marla realized that they need each other more than they thought and started to
develop feelings for each other. In order for Sean to have room in his heart to love Marla,
he leaves on a journey to find himself.

This is my first time reading something from this Author and I can tell you that it won't be the
last time. This is a must read Novel!

This is a most unusual book. Hand-Me-Down Love is such an apt title for this book.

A sister gets a brain tumor. After a valiant fight... she is gone ... after asking her sister to watch out for her husband who will need help to cope after her death.

The husband just can't deal with their home and he moves to another city and rents a condo. The sister and her brother-in-law keep in touch by text and the occasional phone call. He gets totally drunk and calls the sister, Marla, for help. She picks him up from a bar and takes him home. The next morning Sean says he can't stay in the condo any more, that he needs to be around people somehow. Marla offers to let him stay in her spare bedroom.

Later, she helps him close up and empty the condo. Then, he says he wants to sell the house he and her sister owned, so Marla, once again, does all the work and packs up everything to be stored and also, lists the house. Since it's a desirable house in a great location, it sell and closes within 3 weeks!

Marla keeps working in her antique and vintage shop while all this is going on. She's having trouble dealing with her grief over losing her sister and familiarity of living with Sean is starting to lead to attraction. Both of them are feeling it and also feeling guilty.
After acting on their feelings, Sean realizes he needs to go away to sort out his heart and his grief. He hikes part of the Appalachian Trail and then takes a break and works for several months for a lumber company right off the Trail that sometimes hires hikers.

Marla, meanwhile, goes back into a routine of visiting with her parents on the weekends. She also goes to a grief counselor. And an old boyfriend comes back into her life and they start seeing each other, a lot.
