Editorial Reviews

From the Inside Flap

Although, or perhaps because, most of us write less and less by hand, our fascination for handwritten letterforms is growing. Typeface designers who specialize in traditional, charming, or spectacular lettering with a handmade look have become role models for today's young typographers and graphic design students.

I was hesitant to purchase this book without a look inside, but it exceeded my expectations and is everything I hoped for. Such as wonderful variety of art is covered here, from Arabic calligraphy to contemporary script logos; fine art to commercial art. The quality is great, the examples are well-presented and labeled, and there is so much information to soak in. This book is great for inspiration and totally worth the price. I'm happy with this purchase.

Pros:
Great printing and paper material for pages and cover, This would make for a nice coffee table book to flip through

Cons:
Different than what I expected...I was expecting more in progress work from the featured artists or a really nice collection of vintage packaging featuring inspirational typography

The perfect book, cover to cover. Crafted with sumptuous photos of exquisite calligraphy, the whole content is revealed through a well balanced, sober and perfectly executed page layout.
Its preface alone constitutes the Calligraphy dream course syllabus. The insights from the interviews with world leading calligraphers are priceless.
This is a book that everyone with an interest in contemporary calligraphy and type design is going to love for years.
I wish there was a way to highlight somehow on Amazon books that are apart from the rest: this one belongs in that category.

I was disappointed. I bought the book sight unseen based on reviews. I come from a background in typography. I've recently become more interested in calligraphy. I would recommend any back issue of The Annual Juried Issue of Letter Arts Review over this book. I would also recommend Contemporary Calligraphy: Modern Scribes and Lettering Artists I & II if you can find copies. This was an expensive mistake for me.

I received this book for Christmas from my son and his family and I absolutely LOVE IT!! It is a very well done and a very informative book with many wonderful examples of beautiful calligraphy. I intend to go through it page by page. I am so happy to have it as part of my calligraphy library. I think anyone buying or receiving this book will be thrilled.

This book is informative and shows a good range of lettering artists and work. The interviews are a great feature and help the reader understand the motivation and background to the projects. Nicely printed and the examples are easy to see and view. Good for professionals and informed amateurs alike. Nice book!
