I was skeptical at first when I bought book for 28 dollars and it said it was a library book cause I thought it would’ve been more worn out. HOWEVER, they exceeded my expectations especially with delivery! I got the book really quick, way faster than any of the more expensive books there were to buy. OVERALL 5 STARS AND I WILL DEFINITELY LOOK INTO MORE OF THEIR PRODUCTS!

I originally bought this book to help me study for a proficiency exam at my university. It offers so much terminology on many literary terms and elements. This will definitely a must for any English teacher

I have compared Prof. Harmon's 2012 edition to Prof. Holman's 1972 edition. Although both are excellent, the new edition contains new terms, especially on poetry, which are very useful. I also like the idea of including world literature in the Outline of Literary History at the end of the book. This is certainly the best dictionary of literature ever. I am glad I got to know both, Holman and Harmon, back in the seventies, when I was working on my Ph.D. at UNC.

This book was on the list of required textbooks to buy for my college literature class, but it wound up being a waste of money. It's just a dictionary of literary terms, something I could have looked up online. This book was really expensive for what it was, and I regret buying it. I gave it four stars because it was extensive, and maybe if my classes weren't online it would have been useful to me...

I ordered this as a spare copy for my classroom. This is the one book I wish I'd had access to in my high school and college days. I didn't find a copy until my last year of college, and it was an accidental find.
Now that I teach high school English, I keep a couple of copies on hand for my students. The definitions are clear and so precise! Anyone who studies literature should have a copy - of any edition.

It is a school book and it is to help broaden my vocabulary.

If you find a better handbook for literary terms than this 5th edition of A HANDBOOK TO LITERATURE, please let me know what book it is. This reference book is extremely comprehensive, well organized and well sparkled with new and extended perspectives on definitions. There are explanations and expanded insights for literary terms for description of what you might be reading or writing. Highly recommend.

I thought this book would have been a dictionary, but it is more detailed, more of a mini-encyclopedia. Some of the words have just a brief sentence, but many of them have a much longer discussion. Some of the words have multiple etymologies listed, which explain how they can be used with varying shades of meaning dependent on the context.

I purchased this in my last year of my honors program - my only regret is that I didn't purchase it sooner! It's a great reference tool.
