Format: Hardcover
This is a Must Have book for any Program, Project, or Operational Manager. Dr. Brown's straight, no nonsense approach is both refreshing and practical. His tenets of integrity, consistency, and trustworthiness are the hallmarks of successful Program Management and are well demonstrated in a smartly designed book. The logical order, effective use of key bullets, and downplaying the role of tools to solve problems elevates potential leaders to greatness among their peers. Dr. Brown is generous with practical scenarios, real-life experiences, useful tips, and smartly avoids the pitfalls of needlessly relaying to charts and graphs to illustrate his message.

As a certified PMP, CSSGB, and an approved candidate for the PgMP exam, I have read dozens of books on the subject of Program Management. While I have the good fortune to learn from many experienced leaders in this field, none can articulate the point as well as Dr. Brown's book, "The Handbook of Program Management". His wealth of experience is second-to-none and he is generous in crediting others in his field while selectively directing the reader to well-respected publications to further advance their knowledge, understanding, and ultimately careers.

Whether you are looking to rise to the next level as a Program Manager, a new or experienced Project Manager wanting to understand the "Big Picture", an Operational Manager needing to develop a more successful team, or a senior leader that wants to step up their game and drive success, this is the book that will open those doors.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand program management, particularly those who have recently transitioned (or are looking to transition) to a program management role.

This book gave me great insights into the types of things to be conscious about when taking a program view versus a project view.

The concepts and examples given are practical and based on common sense.

Although numbers and statistics can be useful to some extent, greater emphasis/focus is given in understanding the big picture and context when delivering programs of work.

Many of these concepts I found were intuitive and made alot of practical sense - I recently started managing a program of work, and I could relate a number of situations and examples described in the book. A number of things I suspected were true were clarified and crystalised in the chapters of the book.

The book also talks of the pitfalls of spending too much time on excessive detail when working as a program manager - it's more important to focus on the overall health of the program rather than getting caught up in uneccessary details.

It's the best book on this topic I have read and I am highly likely to be referencing this book in future.

Great read and an excellent source for what's truly important in Program/Project Management. Dr. Brown focuses the content towards highlighting the people side of the equation when it comes to being a successful program manager. Much of what is in the book aligns to one of his basic tenets in that project management is really structured common sense and there's no magic software tool that is available to replace experience and sound judgment.
From my own experience and perspective I found great value in the section about Portfolio Management. There's a real art to prioritization and Dr. Brown explains the importance of the exercise and how it plays into the culture of the organization.
I do program management as my day job and this book was a good balance between validating some strongly held views I have as well as many insights into tips and tools to improve the proficiency of execution.

Great book - so relevant to today's Program / Project Managers in any type of business. Many of the chapters’ content struck close to home and I was constantly relating the content to my present work situation / environment. Chapter 5 in particular had me putting markers on many pages that hit most closest to home.
In Chapter 10, Figure 10-1 relates to Little's Law (Cycle Time = WIP / Average completion rate) . This is absolutely true isn’t it? Try to do too many projects consuming the same resources; essentially everything slows down.
Thanks to Dr. Brown, we all have an easy to use desk reference anytime we are struggling with how to improve our programs and or projects.
