This is the best sandtray book I have ever read! She includes practical and useful data. She has great pictures, an excellent index in the back for cross referencing, and many excellent ideas. After a client leaves I often wonder about the placement or use of an item, this book is my new sandtray bible. I highly recommend this book to anyone who practices sandtray and works in the managed care system. This book is great for people without much time. I grab this book at least once a day.

The case studies in the text are very helpful when reviewed with the included photos of the client work. I'm amazed that so much is revealed of the inner life of the client from the creation of a tray. While this process was originally created for children in Jungian analysis, this seems to me an excellent way for individuals of any age to begin to gently access and heal long-term issues that haven't been responsive to traditional talk therapy methods alone. Having experienced the work in a course with the author I can vouch for the satisfying nature of the experience as a student/client.

Ms. Barbara Turner has succeeded in making Jung's work accessible, interesting and palatable within the context of sandplay therapy. Many of Jung's direct translations from German into English have fallen short of this mark. This massive and well researched text book is jam-packed with case-studies and pictures of actual sandplay processes (trays). Ms. Turner clearly knows her topic very well and the interpretative work is very useful. On the downside, it would have been worth, given this important work, to publish the pictures in colour. The black and white reproductions are low quality and hard to discern. However, the illustrations do counter this problem a bit. This book may well be THE benchmark in the field and it should be on the book shelf of everyone intersted in sandplay (therapy). Kay U. Brugge, D.Phil, Lifestrategist, Johannesburg, South-Africa.

Doctor Barbara Turner's Handbook of Sandplay therapy is an excellent starting place for learning Sandplay therapy and Jungian theory; it is also a resource that even after years of study you will find you return to again and again. This is an excellent, well written, practical and comprehensive handbook. Doctor Turner is able to make difficult theoretical concepts understandable, she offers practical examples of concepts using case material and at the same time she points the way to appreciate the subtle and complex. As an example of the ability of Dr. Turner's writing to call to the reader on a deep level I will quote from the section on Content and Themes in Sandplay, "The Sand in our trays is so ancient as to be timeless. To enter the sand in the ritual of Sandplay is to engage in timelessness. To engage with the sand in a free and protected space is to exit ordinary time and space and to enter sacred time."
Dr. Turner provides practical instruction and encourages the reader to go further in their study and personal development. This book is filled with wonderful examples and as I stated earlier it is a book that you will return to over and over again, I highly recommend this book. The Handbook of Sandplay Therapy

if you're looking for a quick read to help you plan a sand tray session, this book may not be for you. It is packed with research and case studies and the author knows her stuff. I've been finding it a bit difficult to get through, but the information is valuable.

This book is incredible! If you are looking for technique that reaches out to hurting people and changes their life (in what seems instantaneously), this book is for you. Although I do not come from a Jungian approach, I must say that Carl Jung (you remember him, from PSYCH 101)is brilliant! You may find yourself struggling with some of his techniques and such but this approach overall is fantastic and healing. Barbara Turner (the author of this book) is a talented writer and teacher as she examines this inner workings of the Sandplay Therapist, Jung's approach, and Dora Kalff's brilliantly creative technique. This is the perfect storm for learning and exploring a new way of life & therapeutic practice. Don't let the size and heft of the book discourage you. From the moment you open it, you are already becoming transformed. Enjoy your growth spurt!
