All of the action takes place in a relatively short span of time and reads like a novella. I would have liked to have seen it as a longer book just to have held onto these delicious characters a little longer. In the style of good-old fashioned romance, the author, Helen Susan Swift, alluded to her characters' desires, but avoids explicit sex scenes that can turn romance into erotica.
Hopefully Swift will carry on with the lives of her characters and we can enjoy the way she paints this era of Scottish history.
However, I did find the ending a little disappointing. It was kind of like all the adventure fell flat.
It was kind of like the author ran out of ideas on how to end the story.
I really enjoyed the beginning & middle, the end was okay (not terrible but not as good as the rest of the book).
I would read another book by Helen Susan Swift, as she has a lovely writing style.
This tale is told by a great grandmother to her descendents so she has the wisdom and perspective of a woman with experience. She allows the narrative to unfold while making comments and giving advice but without giving away more about her life than she knew at the time.
It does take some time to get into this book and really care about the spoiled rich girl but let me assure you that it is well worth it.
I found myself bookmarking words of wisdom that the heroine made with her experience. There were several times that I laughed out loud. This is a great book. Don't let any quitters convince you otherwise...and I'm picky!
